Why do we love jerks? Modern culture is obsessed with the Tony Montanas, Rich Sanchezes, and Walter Whites of the world. And in their obsession, fans often take away from a piece of media the exact opposite of what its creators intended. How does this happen? Join us as we go back to the jerks that started it all.

  • I don't agree with your premise that these characters are assholes to begin with. They're strong willed, single-minded individuals who exert their will on the world even in face of danger or severe resistance who also care for their loved ones and have shown instances of self sacrifice for them. This factor of an unstoppable will is what makes us admire them - something that we all want to do. It's simply power. One who has power can do something in the world - for himself or other people. Now whether what can be done is good or bad is a totally different topic but I think to call them assholes is a bit too far fetched.

  • I think we worship asshole characters because they often win. What I learnt from those characters is that being an asshole gives you an edge over nice folks. You cheat on a exam = you get good grades, then you keep cheating your way to the top...you are an asshole, buy hey, you are successful, atleast more that the honest-to-god guys who didn't cheat. The world is designed to make assholes win, even in the animal world, it is the big, strong, bullies who have a better chance of passing their genes onto the next generation. Since most of us want to be successful, we worship asshole characters and think of them as more competent than us (rick sanchez is more competent, but a lot of asshole characters simply choose to take advantage of other people and be deceitful. If you chose to do the same, believe me, you would be more successful.... It's just that you stick to your morals...assholes don't, and morals ultimately don't matter all that much)

  • I've realized that i just genuinely love Rick. I've been trying to figure it out, and i think it's that simple. I love Rick. Like, i just do. No idolization, no fangirling. I don't look up to him and i don't like the way he treats others most of the time. But, as a character, he has such depth even though he's such an asshole and generally all-around awful person, and it feels like the same emotional turmoil you'd go through when thinking of a friend or family member with bad behavior. I hope he's written to grow and learn, but still retain that cynicism we're all addicted to. ❤❤

  • Have you ever read "Hero of Our Time" by Mikhail Lermontov? I feel his take on the Byronic hero has a lot of parallels with this, and one of the main lessons I got from reading it, and the lesson I think my professor wanted me to get, was that I can indeed relate to such asshole characters, and I shouldn't be ashamed of that because we all do. Dan Harmon's fears about his fandom ruining the party exactly that lesson embodied. Perhaps the only difference between people who act like Rick and people who enjoy watching Rick is the self-awareness one might have to understand how they relate and why they enjoy Ricks antics, while not actually having a desire to play them out in their own lives.

  • I think this video essay misses a critical problem. A lot of people in our society worship strength. They like The Punisher because he sets out to do amazing feats of violence and then accomplishes them. They like seeing the asshole do things and exercise power. a certain minority of people are ethically blind. They don't think in terms of right and wrong and they don't ask why right i right and wrong is wrong. They reject the idea that Frank Castle is wrong because he feels powerful as we watch. I think this has set up this attraction to an American flavor of Fascism in this country. Some people see Power = success = good, without asking any of the deeper questions the story is actually talking about. It really bugs me to see people stan for the bad guy, seemingly without awareness why the bad guy IS the bad guy or what makes him bad. I wish we were better at explaining "Hurting people unnecessarily - bad"

  • I think this just boils down to the fact that characters with flaws are much more relatable and entertaining than a perfect hero. Also, I think it's quite therapeutic to watch violence, and atrocities occur in entertainment since in real life it would be horrible. There's a reason why perfectly sane people love to go on rampages in GTA. lol

  • Never really agreed with the association between relatability and realism. Many contemporary games have been demonstrating how all the graphical detail in the world can't connect you to the truth. Nor can any war film if you ask a solider. Instead, I feel like art connects through an emotional truth. The kind that runs so deep, that can't always be expressed through the filter of day to day life.

  • Greek plays were only an hour or two, the end was never far. Tv shows, there can be months if not years between an asshole doing something and their punishment. By removing the punishment for their flaws so far in time, we've functionally erased them. If you have been rooting for someone for years, having them finally get punished after so long, can feel jarring. It doesn't feel like it fits, it feels tacked on or artificial. Humans learn best, when consequences immediately follow the act. When years pass between the act and the consequences, people can fail to connect the dots.

  • I always saw the reason why asshole characters are admired is that the world is full dumbasses and assholes itself and that the asshole character realizes that the world is shit and is sometimes sympathetic by being an asshole back. I mean, if you played Destroy All Humans!, Crypto, despite being a genocidal alien soldier, is seen as completely sane due to the fact that he lands in a parodic version of 1950s America where everyone is a paranoid idiot and thinks Communists are everywhere. Then you have the GTA protagonists who act a bit more moral than some of the characters they come across in the game. Or at least, that is how I interpret it

  • several things. Mainly being something that we can't without consequence unless they are not rich and powerful. Also somewhats they gets consequences that we can imagine our assholes neighbor sufferings. Besides that assholes characters are not cut by pc culture and if they are they actually never say "i hate homophobes" they just do assholes things, and this way they relate to the rl asshole and the person that actually want what pc culture pretend to archieve, being treat like a normal human being.

  • I feel like the hero and all the good characters are either too good and popular or talented or just plain unimportant. The lack of believable flaws makes them unbelievable. Also the idea that the hero can't fail or in the case of fantasy novels prophecy gives the same impression. He is too good and even if he isn't he won't fail. There is just something wonderful about him even if no one knows what. The anti-hero is almost as flawed as the average person if not more. And even if he is more flawed he looks way more relatable than most heroes so there isn't really much choice.. Plus he achieves everything he got with hard work and determination even though we the viewers don't know if he will. This makes it more like our own stories.. We see our own flaws more clearly and we don't know if we will achieve what we want to. More often than not we feel we might not. This makes the anti-hero more relatable. I have felt for a long time that the way we write fiction and tv-series and movies is not good. The problem is not that the audience likes the anti-hero but that the authors don't write heroes people can really see themselves as.

The anti-hero allows us to live vicariously through a fictional character to express that deep need to question our own reality. It gives us the freedom to accept the things we cannot change by basically saying "yeah we know this isn't right but, we all have to deal with it" It gives us the feeling that we do not suffer social injustice alone but together.

  • I think Rick worship goes one step further as he's able to almost overcome fate unlike the heroes of ancient Greece. This is best illustrated by Rick's interaction with Beth after cloning Tommy. "So if I'm just like you, does that make me a bad person?" "Worse, you're smart. When you're smart you realise nothing matters and when that happens you can take the universe for a ride and I've never met a universe that was into it." Even though he admits that fate eventually gains the upper hand, anyone of us would jump at the chance to get the slightest taste of a victory of such magnitude. The biggest difference between Rick and other idolised ass holes is that he is a cosmic nihilist and therefore, his fans are raging against not just a broken society, but their own existence. Rick is closer to the Greek myths in that he chooses to fight an unwinnable battle against fate because he knows his only other option is suicide caused by existential dread, the magnitude of which would drive most people insane. This makes Rick worship far more potent and self destructive. I am a massive fan of Rick, but I don't surcome to the super self destructive tendencies of Rick and his other fans because I'm an existential nihilist. The only difference between us is that a cosmic nihilist will dive head first into the abyss and an existential nihilist will sit at the edge of the abyss and crack open a cold one with the lads.

    DeepFriedSaltDeepFriedSaltIl y a 27 jours
  • It's not just blaming fate vs society. It's that blaming "fate" allowed an overall structure to continue to exist which kept things slightly stable. This structure was time tested against reality so it was reliable and worked. Improvements could be made but you'd have to honestly and falsifiable test against reality constantly. We didn't do that. We took the opposite approach. Instead we'd come up with fantasy (which is fine) but never actually test that fantasy to reality. Instead we'd continue to go further down the rabbit hole, which detaches even further from reality (that mismatch causing even more problems) while satisfying the fantasy aspect. In a harsher world we'd be forced to have reality slap us in the face (and it still likely will, harder than ever before) but we've made things incredibly comfortable for us, and evoke extreme safety-ism now. This cements detachment from reality. "Fate" allowed for a story which wasn't strictly true, but at least represented in a very VERY rough sense of what the general result would be. Blaming society disregards anything needing to keep society actually running in the first place. All you have left is fantasy fulfillment without the VERY real backlash effects that will occur. (Some of which do, but because the understanding is so poor, it's blaming society again rather than realizing your own effect.)
