  • I'm really tired of hearing what Marx had to say about capitalism. He noticed a problems of capitalism but that doesn't mean those problems does not exist outside of it. There were always haves and have nots, the only difference is the mechanism the ones in power used to get there. His solution to this was socialism, utopian nonsence that created worst totaliarian regimes in history and to this days countries adopting it create not only the same rich (party) vs. poor divide but also tank economy and in the end everything left to redistribute is misery. They were no magical times when everybody was happy and there probably never will be. Do you think somebody gave a damn about mentaly ill, handicaped or uneducated before capitalism was around? In the end all we can do is to do our best and get as far as we can, accepting that just because somebody else has way more than you do doesn't mean you should have it too or that you suffer more than you would otherwise. The choise isn't everybody getting their needs met vs. rich being rich and poor being poor, the choise is between world where other people have more than you do and if you are lucky and smart you can have a lot too vs. world where everybody starves and lives in the worst condition than the lowest classes in capitalism, there is nothing to aspire to and only people in power are those who propagate the system the hardest instead of those worthy of it. I lived in it, watch Chernobyl series and tell me if socialism, where policy is more important than reality, is the way to go.

  • I had a really different take on Parasite. To me, the film seemed to be saying that the Kim family was only dirty and poor because they decided to be. Not one person in that family ever did any honest work, even though they apparently had both skills and opportunities. The film seemed to frame their grifting not as a survival strategy, but as an excuse for not wanting to do any work. For example, they conned their way into jobs they had (most of) the skills for, but then the film made it clear that they actually had no intention of doing a good job. Even with the pizza boxes, they did a bad job and then conned their way into getting paid anyway. The Park family was oblivious and objectifying, but unlike the Kims they weren't deliberately manipulative. The film never gave us the sense that Mr Park didn't earn his job or wasn't good at it, unlike the Kims. And then in the end, the film frames the most noble act of the movie as when Kiwu just decides to become rich, as if that's all that needed to happen. So... he just needed to make that decision, this whole time? And no one in his family had done that before? That was the problem? Wow, why don't all poor people do that? Now don't get me wrong, I DO NOT agree with any of those messages. I don't think poor people decide to be poor. It just seemed like the movie was trying to tell me that poor people just need to stop leeching off the rich, and that maybe if they actually worked hard they could change their shitty lives - which is beyond heartless. I thought it was very strange to have a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" message coming out of South Korea. Did anyone else read the film this way?

  • I am a huge fan of korean cinema and sonewhat resented the lack of appreciation they got in the past. And now we finally see appreciation for a korean movie, but it turns out to be manufactured snobness. Even the director/writer failed to make the case for that which all of the internet seems to agree to see in parasite. No the kims do not do all that is necessary to survive in modern day korea, they fucked up folding pizza boxes for gods sake. Throughout the entire movie you see the Kims playing out a pattern that shows you WHY they are poor and struggling. They all managed to play a role when the rich family was around. they played the role so well, that there was practically no difference to people that actually live such a life and don't just play the act. Their problems are entirely of their own makings. The second they don't have to keep up the act they turn back into their disgusting lazy unemployable drunken selfs. I don't understand the all the praise in this form, as said, it seems like manufactured hype/approval. why is the dad's Philosophy of Life always overlooked in such analysis? could it be that acknowledging its existence would make it impossible to have symphathy for the Kims, and by extension the whole of lower class poor people? (im saying this as a former member) just to summarize Dads genius way of life : "I never make plans. Plans can fail and then you have to deal with the outcome. If you don't make any plans, then there is nothing to fail. Things are just happening"

  • JOKER was better and more popular, because a lot of people could relate to it. Parasite (watched it last night, great movie btw) focused on how karma can hit you back when you take life for granted, and is a bit more emotional. In JOKER however, we step into Arthur's mind and see how people can be decieving and how easily a person can be broken, and can cause chaos with ease. It's a movie that shows us that the biggest threat are people with nothing left to lose.

What choices do the absurdly wealthy give the absurdly poor? To the legions of Amazon warehouse workers expected to toil during a global pandemic, is Jeff Bezos just "someone they don't like"? No, that trivializes it. He may be a funny, even nice person. They may like him a lot, if they knew him. But he's hoarding the means to their health and survival - he could snap his fingers and give each employee 100,000 dollars and have FIFTY BILLION left over - how am I supposed to say "ok but violent revolution is immoral"?   • The impact of climate change points to both a metaphor and the reality of environment we inhabit. The realisation that in destroying the climate of society, creating inequality and the erosion of world weather stability, has the gap between the haves and have nots, widen. Both climates are in dire need of attention, both expose the indifference of the rich and the helplessness and oppression of the poor. Both films are brilliant depictions of the eroding integrity of mankind’s ability to take care of everyone and everything that matters.

  • "They rage for a better world, but do it in all the wrong ways'' Is there really a right way to start a revolution? Will the milder, nicer way be as effective? I think not. Without blood and death there is no revolution and no change. These "terrible things" have to be a necessary component in a revolution for it to be taken seriously. Wars are fought in the same way. Revolution is something every civilization must go through periodically; to stifle it is to postpone the inevitable boil over of human rage caused by injustice. It needs to happen and must run it's course. We have been putting off revolution in this world for far too long. Right now politicians are using complex political tactics, technology , misinformation, manipulation and censorship to placate billions and lie to them. All in order to make excuses about environmental problems, disease, social class division, war etc that are not being taken seriously or being addressed. This is like storing more and more gunpowder under your floor, sooner or later it will all go off. Better it goes off in small kegs than the whole shebang.

    • I was thinking the same thing. What would have happen if my ancestors had not guillotined their ruling class? This class would have gone to find the ruling class members of other countries to ask for help and would have made war on the revolutionaries. I would still be living under a king now. The powerful don't give up their power if you ask sufficiently nicely. Sometimes, there is no better solution than to eliminate your oppressor. The power of some people are just too dangerous and too destructive to the many for even the threat of it to be allowed to continue to exist.

  • In the third act of Parasite there was a sequence where Mrs. Park was enthusiastically searching for what to wear out of her closet full of designer brand clothing and the next scene immediately shows people taking refuge in the gym fighting over scrap clothing as authorities are trying to cam them down. Really shows how natural disasters drastic affects the opposite ends of class.

  • Joker walks the line of an exploited and ignored individual (representing the opressed) and the consequences that captalism creates. But it is in a position were the individual is also a villan. This brings the problem of empaty to the table. Now Parasite, while also painting with the strokes of murder, show a likable antagonist that made it believable in a better way.   • I was born and lived (until it collapsed) in a country built on Marx's ideas. Workers owned factories. Sounds great in theory but reality was unsustainable. So please when we realize that something went wrong with capitalism let's just fix what's wrong looking for inspiration in Scandinavian type of capitalism which has negligible class gap rather than that of Carl Marx reality of which brought tremendous inequality upon people.
