  • So many weebs in the comments, I hate modern anime. To me something like Elfen Lied is edgelord bullshit and AToT feels edgy for edgy sake too, I also hate how it looks, too much CGI and I even hate the look of digital paint. God, I miss Cel Animated Space Operas and Meccha, but they're a product of the past and you only get the joy of discovery once. I'm saving Gundam and Macross like it's Champagne.

  • As a fan of animation my whole life. I think one reason animation is successful is that it is more aesthetically phenomenal than even some of the best FX and props on tv shows/movies. Like animating cartman getting probed probably cost a hell of a lot less than someone who woul need to assemble a set, costumes, actors etc. With animation you can literally creat the most wildest and zany ideas, while also touching on the sociopolitical silence of today. Most of the sat morning cartoons of the 80s were pretty much propaganda to the youthful masses.

  • Great video toward the end! I would have included more about Daria because I am a huge fan, but I also would have included this about Betty Boop. She was one of the only female characters that was not just a female version of her male counterpart. She also started out as a dog, but the animators transitioned her character into looking more human once she was more popular. For more information I would check out Lindsay Ellis talking about Minnie the Moocher here: frworld.info/net/vid-o/tqKkorSY3p6Rs54

  • I think the rise of adult animation will have less to do with the medium itself and more to do with practicality from studios. No more having to build sets or find locations, no more pricey actors as voice actors are typically more affordable, no more concern with actor aging or wanting out as animation never has to change and it's not terribly difficult to replace someone typically, and effect such as explosions or wide sweeping scenes of cities or planets or fantastical creatures and places are much easier drawn then filmed or realistically CG'd. In the end, though still difficult, it often will beat the price of real life. A show could go forever... for better or worse.

  • I think one aspect of current adult animation boom that wasn't touched much is the fact that many viewers less than 30 or 40 grew up with the Saturday morning cartoon. As such animation was a part of our young years, and as we grew we still wanted to watch animation, but the animated themes would also change with us as we became adults.

  • I think we're seeing a lot of adult animation in the west because Japanese animation having never got to the point where they viewed it just for kids. So, with the advent of the internet, we were all suddenly exposed to the wealth of content being made around the world that often catered specifically to adults. I think there's almost this form of jealousy regarding Japanese animation, in America especially, where the adult animation is currently most prolific. On top of that, the social costs of producing graphic scenes of violence or sex in animation are quite different than in live action. Drawing those things creates a sort of added barrier to our suspension of disbelief, where we don't have to think about a real person experiencing what we're seeing on the other side of our screens. So, alongside that jealousy is this ever-increasing desire to be taken seriously within the animation medium be depicting more and more of what most would be uncomfortable with in live action.

  • I guess because of the stereotype that animation is for children, when edgy and adult content is depicted its made all the more resonant by subverting audience expectations. It also makes so much sense that animation is such an expressive art form, as its lucid nature of not comforting to reality and our perception of it makes it a perfect place for artistic expression. (Some, anyway.)

  • Well, my country's broadcasters could not tell (or did not care) that the Simpsons was for adults and aired it on Saturday and Sunday mornings, right after Digimon/Pokemon and such. I was watching it since I was like seven, and so did all the kids of my generation. Of course, no one really understood the show at that age, all kids got out of it was that the characters were mean and disrespectful to each other, and that is, apparently, funny and cool thing to do.

Aeon Flux is an satire(with no comedy) against totalitarian dystopia and action movies or the spy fictions of James Bond
