  • What's the dumbest security theater YOU'VE seen?

    • Greek government's latest mask for students fiasco. They were supposed to give masks to students for the new school year. But they had some friends of theirs make the masks and they made them too large to stay on kids' (or even adults') faces. They probably didn't even check the product they shipped. They just sewed some cotton cloths together and sent them off and got that sweet sweet cash.

  • This video is even more pertinent right now, when many governments are imposing objectively useless practices in order to appease a sense of security. Night hours, forcing people to wear masks while on the streets, but keeping gyms, restaurants, theaters and hotels open. Masks in the streets are by far the LAST possible measure a country should take. The entire world was shaken by protests, in my country we've had them for over 3 months now. And we have zero evidence that people gathering outside to protest actually increases infection. In fact we kinda have evidence of the opposite, with infection rates going down... Outside is the safest place right now, safer than any possible room. So when you have hundreds of thousands of people protesting, you actually don't have them anywhere else, either spreading the virus or getting infected. But making people wear masks outside means that now you CANNOT take a comfortable walk with your mate. If you want to socialize, you need to go... in a bar, restaurant, and other closed spaces where many people gather. It's objectively stupid, but it appeases some people's sense of security. It is a stupid measure, taken by people who are too influenced by lobbies to take actual useful measures. There's many more useless measures being taken by many countries, that are completely stupid.

  • Another area where security theater is huge: Climate Change and pollution. Sorry Erin, banning plastic straws from our town won't stop china and the 3rd world from dumping billions of tons of garbage into the ocean. Our marginal contribution is nothing more than a feel good policy that allows us to put on the act that we are helping the environment while also allowing us to constantly ordering things on amazon and be ignorant to our actual carbon footprint.

  • Over summer, I worked at a restaurant as a hostess (this was in SoCal) and we spent most of our time cleaning menus. We required masks (minus the time eating) at first, but as the weeks went on, we got pretty lenient about it. We spent more focus on cleaning and sanitizing. And the sanitizing wasn’t just a Clorox wipe or something, we used peroxide and towels soaked in sani-wash. And one of my managers was very picky about the peroxide: she insisted that we let it sit for 30-45 seconds before wiping it off. This proved to be a very dumb idea because the menus started molding. If we weren’t busy, we’d have time to dry them off, but during a rush, our managers would just make us give out wet menus. All those extra cleaning rules didn’t stop COVID, it just made us short on menus because we had to throw them out.

  • im not going to the theater until the plague is done. (well, im not going anywhere really but) how's a man supposed to eat popcorn with a mask on lol. kinda defeats the point of the mask if you gotta pull it down every 10 seconds. i could just get no snacks or drinks but that kinda subtracts from the experience, especially at my local theater. my local one is like super fancy and they have actual hot food they cook for you, with big chairs that have little trays and everything. none of that will work during a plague. i doubt anybody is reading this random tangent, but yeah.

  • Speaking of safety. 11) List of studies from 1981 to 2015 on the ineffectiveness of face masks to prevent infection: Neil Orr’s study, published in 1981 in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Dr. Orr was a surgeon in the Severalls Surgical Unit in Colchester. And for six months, from March through August 1980, the surgical staff in that unit decided to see what would happen if they did not wear masks during surgeries. They wore no masks for six months, and compared the rate of surgical wound infections from March through August 1980 with the rate of wound infections from March through August of the previous four years. And they discovered, to their amazement, that when nobody wore masks during surgeries, the rate of wound infections was less than half what it was when everyone wore masks. Conclusion: “It would appear that minimum contamination can best be achieved by not wearing a mask at all” and that wearing a mask during surgery “is a standard procedure that could be abandoned.” Masks are useless in preventing the spread of disease and, if anything, are unsanitary objects that themselves spread bacteria and viruses. Masks get touched regularly, sneezed in, coughed in, and create sweat and moisture which all create unnecessary contamination to be inhaled, again and again. In Tunevall’s 1991 study, a general surgical team wore no masks in half of their surgeries for two years. After 1,537 operations performed with masks, the wound infection rate was 4.7%, while after 1,551 operations performed without masks, the wound infection rate was only 3.5%. A review by Skinner and Sutton in 2001 concluded that “The evidence for discontinuing the use of surgical face masks would appear to be stronger than the evidence available to support their continued use.” Lahme et al., in 2001, wrote that “surgical face masks worn by patients during regional anaesthesia, did not reduce the concentration of airborne bacteria over the operation field in our study.” Figueiredo et al., in 2001, reported that in five years of doing peritoneal dialysis without masks, rates of peritonitis in their unit were no different.

The best governments can do to is to stretch out the widespread infection cases so health services aren't overwhelmed. Of course, no government could survive such a "do nothing" policy, even if it's ultimately the most successful (and certainly cheapest!).

One of the interesting things that was somewhat more lightly touched on was the act of playing certain roles during this current time period, namely, that people do seem to be more interested in 'leaders' actually going through the actions of being a leader, even if the actions taken are considerably less than stellar (i.e. major deaths in nursing homes due to throwing infected residents back in them).

  • This is why I don't wear a mask. It offers false security. You put your mask on and spout how much you care about not spreading Covid-19, but then you unconsiously touch a pole or something and wipe your eyes because they itch. Like the video said, the best effort is to social distance, keep your hands sanitized, and have screeeners to stop the idiotic sick from being near others. My entire family and friends have yet to catch Covid-19 due tot his. In fact, our whole town has screeners to isolate the sick, protect the high risk, and keep zones safe. Like how our water parks and most restaurants are now mask free because we found quarantine and social distancing more effective than masking up and hoping people do everything else. Not saying mask don't help, more that people tend to do a lot less when wearing a mask; opposed to not wearing a mask and doing the more effective stuff.

That's because the government thinks people won't socially distance anymore if they are wearing masks. There aren't a lot of studies done on coronavirus and masks, and in most the evidence is weak.

If 'YES'... then you are still able to be contaminated by the virus, since the material looks like a chainwire fence to a housefly ! It's NOT giving you any protection... Childbirth death decreases, death from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and so on. • Oh most of the security measures are for show. If you want everyone safe from this virus, force them to stay home for a long long time. (This is not reasonable of course cause the economy would take a huge hit, aka the big players would lose.) But I kinda wonder if virus is really that bad in the first place. Yes we are spiking in cases and deaths are technically going up but so as the flu, car accidents, drug overdoses. If we put security above everything, you get governments and mentally like that of nazi Germany and dictators. (Not saying we are heading toward that way but I am saying that if security is number one.) From what I see from the death counts and how they are collecting data for covid cases and seeing how the media say hospitals are overrunning by covid patients when my sister who work at that hospital said it was basically empty; make me question if this virus is actually even worth treating like its a threat. Could be dangerous but I am not seeing the deaths and sickness from people I see, only on what the news media is pumping out. And the data that is tracking this is flawed in collecting its data (examples: double counting the same patient, misllableing deaths as covid when the patient probably died from something else, telling people they have covid when they go in for a test but never actually got tested because the line was too long, and this whole covid thing got political that now everyone is messing with the data to make their own narrative.) I am just gonna live my life normally, trust God with it, and weigh my actions to make sure my own satisfactions is good but also not harming others/ myself (I will still wear a mask to keep people calm and I will be very cautious when I am near someone who is very subtitle to germs but I will not treat this covid thing like it have a high chance to kill someone.) If I have an argument of that is selfish that I am taking every action possible to protect other around me, just know everytime you drive, you have a chance to make a wrong move and get someone kill, or if you click a random cite and give views to it (marketing on the cite give the cite money if you the viewer view that cite), you could be supporting something awful like slavery (especially porn), or all the little things we do that leave a carbon footprint and how that lead to global warming, or when we support a certain movement and someone use the name of that movement to do terrible things, etc. Basically everything has its risk, and we humans can't be perfect with security and we can't live like it. I will be careful around people with this covid situation but if people don't agree with it, I will hug them and not care with them. If someone is scared of this covid thing, lock yourself in a house and don't leave ever. (Is it harsh, yes, but with this situation, we need to all either be locked up or all catch it for the heard immunity. I dont have a view for either but if everyone is running around with their heads chopped off, I say we do what is most practical and do the heard immunity, aka we all just get sick. (Not all at once but in segments that won't overrun the hospitals.) Ok I'm done with my rant. Surprise you read this far lol.

  • After working in America in the summer of '12, I flew back to Amsterdam from San Francisco. However, my European mind never realized that I would fly back on 9/11 (11/9 in Europe). So when I noticed that I got charged $5.- for '9/11 security measures'. I thought this was a bit of an overkill as the chance something like this would happen again on the same day are astronomically small. Yet, upon going through security I was not checked with extra care. Even better, this was the lightest security check from all flights I've taken while in America. They charged me (and everyone else) $5.- for their security theatre. I realized this then already but now that I've seen this I realize it is not just an innocent cash grab from the airlines but an seriously implemented pandemic strategy to reopen in one way or another, or even to make more money. Which is absolutely bonkers!

  • Maybe the "safety illusion" would be more effective IF everyone could keep their lies straight. Case in point; news media turns the statistics into political attacks, the CDC has contradicted itself more than once on the mask issue alone, the WHO is openly covering for China, and the average person has to make the choice between personal safety and unemployment/eviction. You either know that the sources of authority are lying to you about everything, or you can't afford to care.

Literally education saves lives. Go educate yourself, if you're on youtube you have the entire world's knowledge at your fingertips. • Why do people keep lying and saying masks work in stopping the spread of COVID19? If that was true you wouldn't be seeing the spikes that have happened. In addition, the CDC has told us that masks do not slow the spread of influenza type viruses (which covid19 is one) in studies done in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. So when Wisecrack or anyone else says "well-established methods like wearing a mask slows the spread of covid19" I have no idea WTF they are talking about or what pseudoscience they use, because it's definitely not medical science.

  • I think this applies more to governments and monopolistic entities rather than smaller places. For example with airport security the government can afford to set up security that ends up being mostly theater. While a airline/airport could do it more efficiently given that without travellers using airlines they go out of business a government doesnt have that problem as it will get money regardless of how effective its policies work.

  • Most importantly, isolation and distance. But since we all have to go near people once in a while, wear masks once you are outside of your home and wash your hands whenever possible. Establish your home as a "safe base", and use all available/practical precautions to avoid bringing the virus into your home. This means that anything coming in the door or windows, humans, pets, other living things, non-living things, all must be sanitized in some way as soon as they come in, and must not contact other already sanitized things in the home. For humans and pets, take a shower. For non-living things that cannot be washed, wipe down with those clorox or whatever sanitizing wipes or spray with cleaner fluid and air dry (do not wipe dry, especially if it's alcohol based, because alcohol needs time to kill germs). As for groceries, which sometimes can neither be fully washed nor wiped with cleaner fluid, do your standard procedure, and DO NOT EAT RAW. This means avoiding salads as much as possible. Cooking all of your food will ensure that viruses are eliminated from what you eat, since viruses "die" around 70C or 158F. For this reason, boil your tap water as well before drinking. Do all of the above and you should be fairly safe, it seems like a lot, but honestly once you get into the habit it's not that bad. Unless of course you work at a hospital or something, then other precautions must be observed as well, but then you would probably already know more about what precautions to take than me.

They nipped this in the bud and culturally the population is much more willing to wear masks and engage in generally better hygiene than a good chunk of 'muricans. Lockdowns were very lenient compared to some US states' policies and despite the *ridiculous* population densities in Tokyo/Seoul, their case rate is lower than ours. Handwashing and facemasks work, and not only should we definitely use them for Covid, if you're sick do EVERYONE a favor and wear a mask, especially during flu season. On way back the TSA agent in Hawaii notice I had a pocket knife in my backpack. I went thru the entire way there with it and no one had noticed. I feel like the entire bit we do to passengers is a massive waste of time and does nothing actually make anything safer. Terrorists should frame a picture of me holding up my pants with one hand, waddling thru a check point with my shoes and belt in the other hand with a caption that says we won! We hindered our way of life for last 20 years for something that doesn't really work.

  • being safe is a lie and has always been. nothing new. your safest when you keep your faculties and wits about you. not when a tit in uniform say's you are. health & safety, disease prevention, law enforcement are all half truths. self preparation is the closest you will ever be to being safe and that's likely to fall flat. stiff upper lip and get on with it.

  • uk government says out of all covid protection things, masks are at the bottom of the list, least effective. I think that's because even the health experts can't guarantee safe sterile use even under controlled conditions.

  • Look, Ive had it with your shady spreading of misinformation and one minute long ads at the start of literally every fucking video. Im unsubscribing. Id say I expect a clarification video on the face masks, but I dont expect jack shit from you after that stupid fucking psychologist app. You clearly don't care about this shit and I honestly don't care anymore if I get passed off as a hate comment. I'm sick of you endorsing misinformation.

  • While it's a super interesting topic I think making a video about security theatre in relation to the current pandemic is a really irresponsible move. There are already enough people out there not taking proper precautions because they believe the whole thing is a hoax and they will take anything they can as proof that they're right to try convince others to do the same. It's really damaging and those people are putting others lives at risk unnecessarily. While obviously you can't control how people will interpret your videos, you can avoid making thumbnails that seem to lean into the conspiracy aspect of covid-19. I think this video should have been held off until after the situation is dealt with or at least under control.

  • I honestly came into this video thinking it was going to be one claiming mask wearing to be security theater (I routinely watch videos I might not necessarily agree to see if they actually have any worth while arguments, spoiler alert for videos against masks: they usually don't), I'm glad that preconception proved to be wrong.

  • I applaud you for running this, but why would you give mask wearing a free pass? There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that masks - even properly worn surgical masks, let alone home-made masks - will not protect you or others from infection. This is not simply my opinion. I am a bona-fide bioinformatics scientist and I've read the *actual* scientific literature. Somehow this piece of security theater took on a life of its own and has become much more than just theater. It is an example of religiosity and magical thinking, a strongly-held belief that face masks provide some benefit despite contradictory evidence. I think you would have been better to not address this hot potato rather than choosing a side on it, or at least expected your audience to dispassionately question their own beliefs on the matter.

  • I've seen Amazon ads the brag about their employee temperature checks. My first thought was "Great; if you find someone coming to work with a fever, they've been contagious at the office for a week or more." I don't know what their policy is when they catch someone at a fever checkpoint... but sending someone home with a fever isn't enough. They need to give covid tests to everyone that works in that department.

  • I can't help but think that people are going overboard with the whole pandemic issue because I live in the capital city in my state and don't know anyone who is sick or have i heard of anyone being sick outside of fear mongering news programs. Every winter I know of dozens of people catching the flu but I haven't heard anything about this virus. Social distancing is just common sense to prevent the spread of any illness. Wearing masks might help, but of the people I see "wearing" them, most are wearing them wrong
