  • They've gone from dodging labor unions, to erasing subjectivity, to keeping public images alive, to accepting a select few genres, to accepting bribes for nominations and wins, to accepting political movies. And now, they're forcing movie teams and casts to be racially and socially diverse if they want just a nomination. Come on! This isn't art, this is just more politics!

Jack LazzaroJack LazzaroIl y a mois
    • Eh. The racial guidelines are ridiculously easy to follow. It's not worth rustling your feathers about. It's pretty much just an image-booster, since most films already follow those guidelines anyway.

  • Dude WTF is wrong with you? You know what's worse than the Oscar's? ROTTENTOMATOES. It promotes mediocrity cause the final score isn't the critics average scores, is the number of positive scores dived by the number of all score s. So if every critics gives an average movie like Black Panther 6/10, Black Panther is going to have 100% rating because 6/10 is considered a positive score .

I mean im am one of those people who would say which movie geonra is their favorate, i never say historcal fiction. Serisly how many historical moments can you make a movie from a historacal event that noboy has done and not be repeating for the 50Th Time! Make original content for a change!

  • I've been calling the phenomenon of choosing safe, industry-affirming movies "La La Land Syndrome" ever since that movie came out. I know it's 4 years old now, but can I please talk about it. What were the actual stakes in that movie?? Oh no, he doesn't get to do his exact specific music career! Instead, he has to play keyboard for a famous and respected jazz-influenced band. What a shitty deal! These people don't even GET jazz! And she learns that it's hard to become an actress! ...And then A Star is Born came out, and it felt very similar. Am I supposed to sympathize with people whose definition of a hard time is not being famous? I legitimately enjoyed both movies, but they're just so first-world-problem-y that I couldn't help rolling my eyes at the same time.

    DeadlyDeadlyBeeesDeadlyDeadlyBeeesIl y a 5 mois
    • Not every movie has to have world-shattering stakes. La La Land's a great movie because the romantic chemistry is incredible and the filmmaking's incredibly well-done. Just because no one's world is about to about to crumble around them doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the light of day. It's just a fun, bittersweet ride with great visuals and nice music and you can't really impose what you want it to be upon it.

      David FernandesDavid FernandesIl y a 17 jours
  • I have noticed that any movie “based on true events” has a handicap towards being nominated. Book it.

    FxRFxRIl y a 5 mois
  • There's another angle to all of this. Consider where tense romantic and war dramas would be today if not for the Oscar's "defense" of them as a touchstone of the artform. While, yes, quite a few duds do get nominated and win, that overlooks the truly great films that do get nominated. The problem that I think many people have with the Oscars and other awards ceremonies is that they don't like the difference in subjectivity that is present. Once we understand and embrace the beauty of subjectivity, we can appreciate the Oscars for what they really are - a selection of films that bore significant cultural appeal or meaning in the times they were released. While they might not mean much to us today, or to critics at any point in time, they mean a lot to a large subset of people.

  • The Directors' branch nominated, yes, 2001, Psycho, The Last Temptation of Christ for the Best Director Oscar. But they are just one of the nine voting branches for BP. That makes us think that the Best Pictures would've been a lot different if Directors were the majority in the Academy. But in 2013, for example, out of its 5,600+ members, 1200+ were actors and actresses, while less than 500 were directors - which... is actually... *natural.* A single movie has more than twenty characters with spoken lines, but only one director. There are just so many actors for each director in the world.

Only ever rewarding films that pander to the Academy while ACTUAL deep, impressive, influenceal films get shafted. Hollywood is still in the delusion that it's the core of American entertainment and anything that isn't produced in Hollywood is garbage not even work looking at.

  • The version of Brazil that was released by the studio was undeniably pathetic. The version the critics like is Terry Gilliam's edition, which he showed to critics before(?) the studio release. Both were (still are?) available on the Criterion Collection. Only the studio release was eleigible for an Oscar. (Personally, Brazil is a watered down version of Orwell's 1984 and Gilliam's "villain" is the bureaucracy of middle managers; and given how the studio edited Brazil, yeah, villains.)

Except for one, which I found quite cheesy and predictable. Nice, but nothing exceptional. But it was the only one set in the USA and that talked about first world "problems", so guess what? • Gladiator is a fantastic movie, in practically every category except historical accuracy. It was a classic of the turn-of-century cinema. The Matrix was also great, but to suggest that Gladiator wasn't a deserving winner calls into very serious question your tastes. Let me guess: it was a little too much toxic masculinity and white supremacism, or something?

    LodatzLodatzIl y a 8 mois
  • Honestly, accusing Hollywood of vapid Oscar bait is all well and fine, but not if you're then going to attack actually good movies such as The Green Book because you think it's patronizing. In fact, The Green Book suffered in critical scores for the exact reason that this video was made: white Woke people trying to sound smart all of a sudden because they've figured out that Hollywood has been full of shit for a long time. Far from being the formulaic Oscar bait portrayed here, it was a hit with audiences precisely because of how good it was.
