  • I used to get paid to clean a gym for 4 hours a day. If actually working efficiently, it could be done in 15 minutes. So, 15 minutes into every shift, I'd go to the changing stall and study things to better my life until I was allowed to leave. The work was irrelevant - I just needed to only be seen as busy, doing what I was supposed to be doing when people looked at me - sanitizing the gym was not important to my impotent overlords. It was then I started realizing that basically every job mirrors being in high school and the only way not to have to suck up to Teacher was to be Teacher.

  • In all honesty, these BS jobs are a desire for me these days. If I could work a collective 10 hours a week and get paid well enough with benefits, I don't care if it means spending a collective 30 hours doing nothing. Much better than the POS jobs of retail which pays me minimum wage, no benefits, and "29 hours a week" with no overtime pay (or hazard pay during a pandemic) yet still be considered part-time. Heck, doubly much with most mid-level employees and higher up working from home. I'll take $60k to sit and act productive at home over $20k of working my butt off.

  • So IT is BS job? Apparently computer systems and networks that connect you to the internet do you can watch FRworld and Netflix are run by magic. Computer systems need to be maintained and sometimes repaired like a car. Networks that allow you to access the internet is infrastructure just like telephone or power lines. It takes both knowledge and work to maintain. I bet the people who think IT is a BS job are the same people who are rude to help desk people.

  • I gotta say less so with friends but certainly, with the office the absurdity of the day to day is less present when you realize that we don't get the day to day of the office there is often weeks or even months between episodes the events we see are simply important times that often do have interesting plot hooks or shenanigans such as weddings births and parties however we don't see the real day to day they don't make episodes for the boring days the fact that Jim plays into the absurdity furthers it he allows the extremists and less socially intelligent members of the office fail to understand his sarcasm (Micheal, Ryan, Dwight, Andy, Kevin, Erin) this then extends to effecting the more normal of workers day stopping them from doing work (Stanley, Philis, Toby, Oscar, Angela, Andy again and Kelly) the episodes we see are specifically just the interesting days at the office because they aren't going to show the "every day". It's either going to be absurd due to overly Frequent ostentatious events or it will be boring due to realism the way sitcoms are set chronologically always as many time skips usually between almost every episode for precisely this reason.

I fucking do, don't even tell me I don't. Your dogs are ALL insecure, all the time. A life of permanent anxiety just because you wanted a fucking pet and meat and to feel good about yourself at the same time. If you're gonna be a walking contradiction, you should be publically shamed. That's it. It's that simple.

    • I blame the English language. Or, the way it's used. People who think in English are under the impression it's a universal language, just as I'm under the impression latin is a universal language. I wish more people who take the time to google the words they're using, and to also speak to their fucking kids so they can learn about them, adopt their social tactics, and use them to raise better children. Parents should be totally fucking immune from any kind of narcissism. That's probably my biggest problem with Greta Thunberg. Even if we solve climate change, I say we keep it as a concept, like a negative Santa Clause, teach kids to respect themselves and their fucking environment. My God.

      Timothy BellTimothy BellIl y a 21 jour
    • Then you go from that to being a sanctimonious prick who's mean to salespeople. Honestly. It's the only people whose lives I'm totally fucking indifferent to, except my own. And there's a bidirectional relationship there: I know that everyone working in that job was working under the delusion that money would make them happy, and I saw how unhappy they actually were in practice. It's so dumb. "Money" Dude. I don't follow any laws. Because why? No. Seriously. Why? "Hurrr, let's elect politicians who are so incompetent they create an existence which can do nothing but contradict itself."

  • "Bullshit Jobs" are the result of the conflict between our ever-increasing technical efficiency/production capacity, and the need for constant growth and endless consumption to keep the gears of capitalism turning. As we can produce more and more goods and services with less and less human labor, we require more and more "Bullshit Jobs" to ensure consumers have money to buy those goods and services. What's truly appalling is that most "Bullshit Jobs" pay far better than "unskilled" wage labor that is necessary for society to function. Covid has made that undeniably clear.

The unrealistic part of the show will be the comedy because if Toby would have taken his job serious a lot of the workers would have been fire, and if someone recorded the offensive stuff and went to the media ( which happens often if you google search) everyone will rage about the standards in the work place and want that person fired.

  • Bullshit jobs sounds like a legit and useful term to describe so much of the actual economic activity in the market place, I would just change the term pointlessness for perniciousness (if that's even a word) meaning that jobs do have a point or purpose for example the thousands of people working on call centers come to mind, they help people, however said help only cements an economic machine run by very specific interests and very specific individuals and in no way further the human cause, because it became the norm, just making more money for the sake of making more money.

Compare that to the US military vs say that India or some middle eastern country. You can't win a war with crappy soldiers, training, equipment, etc.. That's the why Germany steam rolled most of Europe during the second world war.
