  • I think the dceu failed because the people from warner bros didnt had enough trust in zack snyder.. they changed the course of two big movies in the middle of filming, rewriting scripts, reshooting scenes, etc. (BvS and justice league) also as exemple he wanted steppenwolf and the parademons to be the villains in suicide squad and justice league to be 3 parts. They shouldve let him do and the dceu wouldve been waaaaayy better and succesful ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • *WHAT WENT WRONG ? Hmm let’s see* ✍️ *1. Lack of direction and hardly any planning* *2. WB ruining the films and directors visions* *3. Choosing the wrong director (zack snyder)* *4. Trying to rush the universe rather than develop the characters and make great movies* *5. not taking enough risks, trying to be the mcu, mind you the shared universe can work if executed properly but not like this, they should’ve done things differently*

  • So, Zack Snyder messed up the DCEU by misunderstanding "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Watchmen" and thinking all DC superheroes were "grimdark" like them, making Superman and Batman out-of-character violent in "Man of Steel", "Dawn of Justice" , "Justice League" and "Suicide Squad", due to his cynicism, Objectivism and "style over substance" summer blockbuster action cinematography. Other directors, such as Todd Phillips of "Joker" and Christopher Nolan of "the Dark Knight Trilogy" made better "darker and edgier" superhero movies by first choosing darker and edgier characters and comic book stories and series, disability, problem, gangster, neo-noir and psychological thriller movies as source material and shooting them like neo-noir psychological thrillers with capes.

  • Marvel made good solo films with Easter eggs here and there. DC made one solo movie and went straight into 2 crossover movies with horrible direction, director problems, and everyone besides Superman didn’t have a single movie. DC were inpatient and it cost them 5-6 years. Now they r making good solo films with very light Easter eggs of a extended universe. With flash and Battinson they have the potential of a multiverse. Now they gotta keep making solo films and then bring together the justice league or whatever crossover they want.

  • snyder is a good film stylist but he is not a good storyteller. look at 300. all snyder did was to make the film look great with the graphic novel story already given by someone else. this movie's problem lies there. batman superman and justice league were just good looking film. period. nothing more... what a shame... snyder missed the very essence of the characters. batman is not a killer. superman is an optimist. he destroyed all of that. shoving shit into original fan's expectations. what good movie would it bring? dc must learn how avengers endgame respected old fan's expectations and hopes.

  • TLDR: Snyder made movies about violence not about people. My take: It's largely DC's failing. By creating flagship characters that are effectively one dimensional absolutes they've created feet of clay that many attempts to complicate them fail upon (unlike Wonder Woman which put in the work to create a person before the adventure). This is why Arrow was not a failure, because Oliver Queen wasn't locked into a preordained boring one dimensional existence, he wasn't a *superhero with a cover*, he was (like many of the heroes Marvel makes) a *person who's a hero*, and thus in Arrow you have a story about people.

Considering that Russell Crowe, Henry Cavill and Snyder himself and I'm sure many more went on record saying that a MoS 2 was supposed to be released instead of BvS, they just tied it together kinda seamlessly but then added a bunch of unimportant things like the Knightmare or the League

At the moment of MoS release the destruction wasn't a setup for BvS since it wasn't thought at that time, it was mostly for show. So then what was the purpose of the destruction in BvS, another setup for Justice League? There are more ways to do that apart from destruction

      KrinKrinIl y a 2 mois
  • Easy. Answer is because the people in charge just want to make fast and more money not art / good movies / adaptation. When they were still fooling around, Marvel have already been establishing their cinematic universe. Now they've become successful, DC wanted to race them without establishing so many things first. They have a lot they don't have yet, and a lot more they haven't done right but instead of investing in their own DC cinematic universe, they just wanted to keep up with Marvel. Ex; they released Batman V Superman along with Marvel's Civil War. Then they did Justice League along with Marvel's infinity war. Which had characters and settings established years and movies ago. You see what I mean? They couldn't even make 1 great film adaptation of the comic characters yet, but they're already trying so hard to do what the other is doing for fast money. In short they don't want to adapt the DC comics into film, they want to make money making films out of stories and characters that are already well known and loved. Basically, milking the source without actually loving / liking the source and without having the goal create a masterpiece out of it. Instead of slowly creating a film inspired by the comics and slowly building the world, DC or whoever are the people in charge just wants to copy Marvel and make fast and a lot of money off of it. Basically, they want what Marvel have. So they keep taking shortcuts. Because they don't care about the source material. They just want money. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's core group all geek out on the source material. They made into the endgame masterpiece not just because they wanted to make films but they wanted to transfer the comics into cinematic medium. I wonder if the people in charge of DCEU actually read comics too and geek out and creatively curate their cinematic universe or are just businessmen who want profit ASAP.

  • I don't think Snyder was wrong about having Batman dark and gloomy, the problem is that Superman and Wonderwoman are supposed to balance that out. The trinity have Batman as the darker guy, Superman as the light one and Wonderwoman in the middle who brings the other together. His real problem is that besides the Flash he made the entire Justice league really dark and that goes against everything they stand for. It certainly didn't help to have Snyder making half the JL movie and then changing to Joss Whedon giving us a result that reminded me of SW episode 9. 2 different visions crashing together. Using Stephenwolf as the bad guy there was also a bad idea, DC have a lot of great villains but he isn't one of them. Not starting out with Darkseid was right, That would be like putting the Avengers against Thanos in the first movie. They could just have used the Legion of Doom instead, while none of them by themselves are a threat to the entire league, all of them together are and they have some great characters in there. The first JL movie is supposed to introduce the league to a new generation of movie goers, like Avengers did. It needs to show DCs strength which is a more positive bunch of heroes the Marvel and a bunch of interesting villains. It is basically the same reason why the Titans show sucked while Stargirl was great, Titans felt more like New mutants then DC while Stargirl showed us DC comics as it should be. Competing with Marvel in Marvels own game will only lead to failure because Marvel are better being Marvel then DC ever could be besides maybe Watchmen (who wasn't written as DC), but DC do have a lot of their own thing to bring to the table. They made the same mistake to some degree in the comics with the new 52.

  • Idk I think people were too hard on Snyder when these movies came out. I quite liked man of steel, and although my first bvs viewing was a hatewatch with my friends where we all drank and made fun of it the whole time, I gotta say it gets better on rewatch. The choice to have superman start off as a beacon of perfect morality then deconstruct that wouldn't have felt compelling to me, having him struggle to do the right thing at first then grow into a better, more human superhero sounds like a far more interesting character arc

    LiamLiamIl y a 2 mois
  • Fine DC did rush everything Compared to marvel, but the original plan wasn't really like marvels but was like REAL MOVIES instead of the marvel formula. Snyder had his 5 movie arc and movies like suicide squad and such were like spin offs. The Dceu was suppose to be one singular franchise with branch offs into other franchises instead of different branches coming into 1. kinda like the Xmen movies. Though honestly every single character or most characters don't need their own origin movies before the team up and back in 2007 i believe their was that justice league movie without any movies before it and everyone was fine with it.

  • I would argue that man of steel was good and aside from 2 or 3 plot bombs bvs wasn't terrible to a point of not being salvageable. The issue is that dc doesnt have a guarantee in the long term. So no one has made movies with a intent to continue on, it all feels as if it were done woth the expectation of being the last film in the series because they were unsure what will come next. On top of all the character changes and reboots it goes to show dc didnt have faith in any direction. I think over all zack snyder succeeded because it was completely different from anything we were use to and most people see it as a fail because theyve been conditioned to want the happy light harded mcu take of things. But even if youve watched the last animated take on the dc universe it begins light harded and gets darker and darler into the rabbit hole. So i think the dceu wouldve went in the same direction til it hit a point of a established win setting the normal baseline everyone knows

    Price SamfordPrice SamfordIl y a 2 mois
  • The biggest problem was that there was a major communicational disconnect between what WB wanted, what the audience expected and what the artist truly wanted to write. This can be seen in BvS, WB wanted to make a film, which United Batman and Superman, while setting up a universe, in one film. The audience were expecting a cool pop corn, neatly woven film, which probably had Batman and Superman fighting for 2 hours or something. Zack wanted to make a film about bringing Gods and titans and dragging them through US politics and propaganda, making a statement about humanity narcissistically projecting our own visions and beliefs onto a human being, it also delved into Existentialism and Nihilism. I think this caught everyone off guard, the public didn't expect this to come out a superhero film. They wanted safe and overtly inspiring rather than the emotional complexity in MoS, which people call too convoluted for it to be emotional. This disconnect cuts to the core of how it all ended up like crap with JL 2017.

  • Another huge factor was that DC try to get the benefits of an established universe without building up the characters like Marvel did. And as you said they tried to build this gritty and dark tone characters without actually knowing them Superman is the Captain America of DC he is the hope, he's the best we can be, he is the moral True North and batman is a more realistic human approach of actually what a human can achieve without powers and with a massive fortune. yet in the movies we've got so for Superman and Batman are not that different from each other. Yeah, they could have build up towards an injustice movie but it wouldn't be a shock like the actual injustice was in real line

I believe he was trying to put forth an alternative SH universe centered around more mature content. However, it seems the DC got into the game a little late. Marvel was already years ahead in their world building. Given the same timeline, we would just now be getting origin stories for key figures such as Martian Manhunter and Cyborg. They could see the genre burnout on the horizon, and had to throw up a hail mary before time ran out.

  • DCEU would have been better if they drew inspiration from their Animated DC counterparts. The animated, Young Justice, Young Justice Outsiders, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited series incorporated dark themes in a way that stayed true to the characters' core beliefs while still providing that glimmer of hope despite the devastation the characters have to face. I've paid top-dollar to have copies of these series, I like them so much! The DCEU can't seem to grasp the basic psychology that people lose interest in a story when there is no hope. I don't think that a lot of people would investe in such a "poor-me-I've-got-issues" storyline, if the characters' lives just go from bad to worse repetitively in a vicious cycle with no hope of change. The character/story becomes boring and the audience becomes desensitized to the character's struggle/pain. I also think that's why the MCU is so successful: they have light-hearted, funny scenes just before a tense or sad scene, or, a tense/sad scene just before a funny scene. It makes the audience invest their emotions in the characters and the story (good or bad.) DCEU also tend to have villains who are evil for the sake of being evil. There is no depth aside from their numerous psychological issues. Ex. DCEU's/The Dark Knight's Joker vs. MCU's Thanos. Joker is a derranged figure who likes being evil and has an obsession with Harley Quinn/Batman. Whereas, Thanos' main mission is to destroy half of the universe's population to ensure that there will be enough resources for all. His conviction is so strong that does so at the cost of the one person he loves. I'm not saying that the actors who played Joker weren't good, as I thought they played him superbly, however, as for villainous motivation, the Joker can never go beyond his psychotic need to do bad things. This one-note villain type is why I thought that the Justic League film failed: the bad guys were bad for the sake of being bad. And, if the Justice League film has the same storyline/plot, I don't think that a different cut of the film will solve that issue. I don't even remember the name of the villain in that film. A good story needs a good villain with legitimate motivations aside from the need to do bad things. A good villain challenges the good guy(s) to their very core, not just in physical power.

  • I feel like this video took my thoughts and made them real. I enjoyed Man of Steel with all it's issues, because I thought the point of it was to present us with a 'not-yet-symbol-of-hope-Superman' and the next movie would address this and show him learn and grow into the iconic superhero we know and love. Instead we had BvS.This made me retroactively dislike MoS, because it showed that Snyder and co simply wanted that version of Supes to be it. The insane misunderstanding of who these characters are at their core is laughable, and the DCEU fans vitriolic defence of them even more so. I really hope things can improve, because the best case scenario would be a world where Marvel, DC and other comic book companies are all making top-quality content for all of us to enjoy.

  • Ultimately, I feel like this universe was at odds with itself. It wanted to be a deep critique on the modern superhero problem, but it couldn’t let good of the feel-goodiness (goofiness?) inherent in these classic characters. This would’ve meant changing designs and structuring dialogue that supports their specific thesis, but they compromised under pressure to the detriment of all hoping to enjoy these films.

  • I don't think Snyder missed the point I just think he willfully ignores whatever themes he doesn't personally find interesting. His movies, as far as I see them, are thematically consistent. They're just way too cynical for my tastes. He had Superman's morals get tested in his very first movie and he fails those tests. There's nothing inherently wrong with that it just ruins the idea of Clark being this ideal and paragon of hope. Snyder is being a cynical realist but it isn't inherently bad nor does that mean he's a hack that doesn't understand what he's doing. But that's just the type of character and story he wanted to make with his version of Superman. But here's the thing, it could work if you're making a bunch of standalone films. NOT if you're trying to build a franchise. I can take Zack Snyder's vision of Superman and Batman but those aren't the characters I can see caring an ongoing story

  • You know, Christopher Reeves SP killed a powerless zod with a smile on his face, while Henry Cavill SP instantly regrets killing a zod that would killed without hesitation defenseless humans. So there's that, MOS was a great movie in my opinion.

  • I think that DC had some great starting point but lost it along the way. This is the route I think they should've gone (feel free to add your thoughts and ideas too) Starting with MAN OF STEEL: I feel that they should've shown more of Superman's internal conflict finding his identity. Him having to choose which side to be on, his human earth raised side, or his Kryptonian identity. Also they should've had Jonathan Kent die the traditional way by heart attack to show that no matter how strong Superman is he couldn't prevent his death. His character should've been drawn to General Zod because he was the last living piece of his home planet and a connection to his roots and origin but seeing Zod's plans to destroy earth left him conflicted. Then show him having no choice but to kill Zod and choose his earth side. This would have left him feeling guilt. THEN they make a second Man of Steel film showing his struggles of trying to be the "perfect" hero and not being able to save everyone just like his father. Then showing some people reject him while others praise him, his own issues as Clark Kent, and still feeling the guilt of killing Zod even though it was the right thing to do and introduce another villain to highlight these struggles. NEXT THE BATMAN: This film had the MOST potential. Giving us a follow up Batman film after two Superman films could have been a great way of working towards Justice League. Going with TDKR storyline or even just basing a few elements off of it could have been an excellent route for Batman if done correctly. We could've gotten an older more experienced Batman out the gate that showed him coming out of retirement and dealing with the long term effects of being the Dark Knight, from loosing Jason Todd, corruption in the GCPD , a rising crime rate and the long lasting feud between him and some of Gotham's villains. We would've seen a depressed Bruce Wayne getting closer to his breaking point and struggling to keep his moral code of not killing. Him getting older would've caused his body to lose a step, adding another issue to the storyline making the idea of killing his enemies harder to resist. With the rise of a vigilante group killing criminals based on "The Sons of Batman" and corruption in the GCPD his relationship with the police would be sour and make him a wanted man in Gotham. The movie could then be about him trying to clear his name while fighting another villain, maybe Hugo Strange. THEN BATMAN V SUPERMAN: This would act as the THIRD Superman film Having Superman being sent by a corrupt government to takedown Batman could be the main plot but then having another threat "Doomsday "unite them ( just like in the actual movie ) realizing that their fight was meaningless could give them both a change of heart after their fight . In this movie they could showcase the differences and similarities in both heroes with Batman learning to be more compassionate from Superman and Superman learning to be a bit more realistic in his approach for justice from Batman. They could also briefly keep Wonder Woman in the movie like they did. This could be the main kick starter into the Justice League with Superman dying and Batman and Wonder Woman being left to assemble a team together after finding out that more powerful threats will make their way to earth. BUILDING THE JUSTICE LEAGUE AND DCEU franchise: This is where DC could have started focusing on other heroes over the next following years such as Aquaman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and any other DC heroes and characters to establish the Justice League. We could have gotten a better Suicide Squad movie or even a Batman prequel that showed the events before the death of Jason Todd or something else. During this time Superman would still be dead and we could see the effects of his death influence the world as we get hints that Darkseid is approaching earth. This would tie in everything we would've seen so far from the events of BVS to now. With the JL being now established and us having more insight into the universe they could have shown Batman's leadership struggles having to band together the league and work as a team. Them fighting against Darkseid's forces would be overwhelming until Superman emerges from death to aid them, now with the full team they could stand a chance against Darkseid's army still incorporating the whole motherbox plot like the did in the original JL, I feel like this would be a better direction for them to go in with the DCEU and give us the proper franchise that could even be as big as the MCU. Let me know your thoughts.

    • @Nature’s Beauty But his death wasn't accurate to the comics AND you gotta think about it like this, John's death didn't mean anything in the long term because Superman ended up doing exactly what he didn't want him to do anyway because he had a responsibility to protect the people of earth, that would have happened regardless if his dad was alive or not so him dying from a tornado was pointless. I get that he wanted to protect his son but dude....really?? You're just gonna let yourself be swept away by a tornado when your superhero son can save you? He already saved those kids on the bus why would it matter if that was is destiny anyway?it I love Snyder's dark take on DC films even though people hate on it. I'm just saying how he could have pieced things together better to build a better story arc for the LONG TERM. Now to your point about Zod....I agree with everything you said, that's literally what I was saying in my earlier post. It could have been better to visually see that split in identity in Superman's life.

      Taj FrazierTaj FrazierIl y a 3 mois
    • it is garbage and you do not know Snyder's actual vision. John's death in MoS showed John cared more about his son's safety than his own life. It wasn't about showing that Superman can't save everyone. And Superman did want peace with Zod and gave him several chances. AND HE LITERALLY DID HAVE NO FUCKING CHOICE BUT TO KILL ZOD

"... more than 4 or 5 lines and you start to notice, like wait, these are two guys ... one guys dressed up like a bat and the other has a big red 'S' on his chest, and they're being super serious about how mad they are at each other..." Quoted from an interview with Zack Snyder. Why was he put in charge of the DC movies?

  • Snyder turned Batman into a psychotic murderer , Superman was even further from him accepted persona. The Kents seemed to not have taught him anything about human life having value. Their main message being "The world's an evil place HIDE!!!" You can keep the Justice League Snyder cut , he has failed to impress me with his ability to get characters right . It's like the Legion of Super-heroes going from a top seller to Vol 4 with the Bierbaums writing the bright hopeful future turned dark and wartorn and the sales dropped like a hot potato.

  • You're being too hard on Zack. He had the right direction as far as the feel of MoS and BvS but it was poorly executed. C,mon, forgive him. He's human. Anyway, BvS smashed a few stories together. Keep in mind... Zack, WB and DC were dealing with the gargantuan movies by Marvel. They were playing catch up and revered the creation of it more than just concentrating on a great DC movie. You can see it in the choices they for the DC character interaction and huge cast with interconnecting story lines. Now, interconnecting storylines is not the problem. Movie studios borrow from each other all the time. It's actually a great idea when thinking long term for movies like DC and Marvel. There is nothing wrong being gritty and dark. As I said, it was just done poorly. Case in point, the introduction of Doomsday. Terrible. An overgrown Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Doomsday should have been built up in each individual movie and then have it come to an end in JL. Too many stories were being mashed together in one movie. Anyway, it was never the actors that were to blame. It was all management, the studio offices and no solid direction of the whole story. Hey, it just didn't gel or line up. It just happened to land right for Marvel and it didn't hurt to have a comic book lover like Kevin Feige either. We'll see how DC goes from here. radio/DS radio/DS Ent.Il y a 3 mois
  • Nothing went wrong in DCEU now. Now only everything is getting on the right path. #ZackSnydersJusticeLeague coming is a good sign. Everything in DCEU was so wrong in 2017. Now it can be fixed. No Geoff Johns, No Joss Whedon, No Berg. None of the snakes are here to interfere now. If WB stop interfering, DC will be fine.
