  • That is not a proper reading of Freud or Piaget. In fact, even if these readings were accurate, the argument that we find things that are cute when they're miserable falls on its face. According to Freud and Piaget children are not so much as violent as they are learning how to properly behave to cope with their environment. Plus, violence and misery are two very different constructs so I don't know how this video could make the assertion that violence and misery both contribute to our perception of cuteness? To be truthful, many scientists and their studies have demonstrated cuteness to be a nurturing instinct which we experience upon seeing someone or something who is "VULNERABLE". This is why people love cats and babies and many other things which are small and VULNERABLE - not miserable. Such a poor reading of literature and science in this video.

  • See, I don't know about you folks, but it's the goddamn polar opposite to me? For example, I find babies to be creepy and uncanny, and yet bears are cute. On one hand there's the thing that poses literally no threat, and there's the giant death machine that happens to look like it has the face of a dog.

  • Yeah, he's cute now, but wait until we get to rebellious teenage Yoda. He'll be smoking Death Sticks with his friends and blasting Sugaan Essena so loud that the Mandalorian won't be able to hear himself think.

  • Holy shit, those critics are cynical--what a shocker. I say this as a cynical asshole myself. But I don't buy it. When I see a tiny adorable thing that is sad or hurt, I don't feel any "desire to be bigger", I see something I could help or heal. I feel empathy and compassion. I can't fix everything, but I can damn sure save that turtle stuck on the road or the bring an abandoned baby squirrel to a shelter (we named him Foamy). I was in a position to help something that needed help and leave the world better than I found it. This is (apparently) sadomasochism, aggression, and violence...(?)

  • This guy may have a point. I've designed a character named "Makie" (MAH-KEE-AY) A cute 18 year old college student who's had her older brother Yusuke not only take care of her, but fight all her battles for her. I've designed this character to be absolutely dependent on the care and protection of her older brother who'll do anything for her. Tragically, Yusuke falls ill to a rare disease that killed both his and Makie's Mother when they were little children. It is at that moment Makie is approached by a mysterious figure that offers her a chance to earn enough money to pay for her dear big brother's medical treatments. Long story short(ened) Makie is put on a cruse ship in lawless waters to participate in a sadistic gameshow for the amusement of all the male patrons on board. The fact that she's both emotionally and physically vulnerable is what makes this story so tantalizing. That's just a little story I cooked up in my head to amuse myself.

  • Very interesting point but I have big reserve toward it. While it seems hardly possible to deny that the most pitiful the thing the cuter it is I think that assigning that to a sort of sadistic tendency we harbour is highly debatable. For me it seems to link with the idea that human are fundamentally bad or something (not all bad, but that our whole behaviours can be assigned to a bad origin like selfishness etc.) when I entirely oppose that. Can't we just deduce from the fact that something NEED to be helpless to be cute to us, that it's because something has to be so, for us to feel like we NEED to help it? It doesn't need to stem from deep seated sadistic tendency but on the contrary to empathy? Japan having been destroyed, disfigured and traumatised by the violence it suffered at the end of WWII was probably more likely to empathize with helpless things as they knew, in their flesh, how it felt to be so. That seem as likely to be true to me, maybe even more so. That's why when a nation discriminate against another or against one of their own minority they don't depict them as cute helpless little thing. I'm thinking particularly of the way Japan was portraying the Chinese in their propaganda during WWII against which they were extremely violent and inhumans.

  • I wonder if the nibbling or cute aggression is an attempt to prove the assumption that the thing is, indead, helpless. The other one might be an attempt to encourage it to safely become less helpless (as the baby, assumedly, does not want to be nibbled on).

  • Key point, but a sort of perfection, even beyond normal proportions, is a huge part of cuteness. Things that are deformed tend to be less cute than perfect things, with the caveat that certain types of imperfections are more perfect than perfect in terms of cuteness. I tend to see cute as a subset of beauty inherently, so I find this an odd take, magnifying the horror of it, but that's the dark side I guess. Still, if something isn't intrinsically beautiful (IE note babies are beautiful, yet not of normal human proportions for beauty!), it isn't going to be terribly cute, and suffering is not beautiful, and thus I don't think it's terribly cute either, though I suppose a certain level of dejection can be contextually interesting, but this isn't so much about cute as it is about any kind of connection. I don't think breeds of dog that can't breathe are 'cute', but I do find many plants very cute that aren't really viable without human intervention, so that is a bit dark I guess!

  • The little know phrase "It's beautiful! We must kill it!" pretty much exemplifies the theories on cuteness. That strange, terrifying urge that almost no one would act on to smash everything on a desk to the ground, to curb stomp the china on a well laid dinner table, to toss champagne flutes across a room, to down the chandeliers in old building, to throw ragers in a mansion, to throw yourself off a sheer cliff face when staring into it's chasm etc....

  • As a Korean War baby boomer, now living outside the hell hole known as the USA, I am shocked at learning about this bullshit. I adopted my daughter at birth in 1993 making her a millennial. Teaching undergraduates from 1986 to 2013, I watched millennials come of age. I never knew there was the same generation gap as between my war monger father and myself, as between me and my daughter and students. Therefore, this “hating” of boomers appears to be a marketing device to grab headlines. What my daughter and some of my students hate with a passion (as well as all of the retired boomers) is the inequality of wealth that took off with Ronald Ray-gun and continues with the poisonous clown in the WH. Dig a little deeper, wise crackers!

  • We do not find things cute because they’re miserable. It’s anything that looks / has baby features. Nobody finds a crying baby cute, they’re annoying abominations. When they’re non-threatening / docile, they’re cute. When they’re loud (in pain) or unable to care for itself (your ex) it ceases to be cute. It becomes a burden or something you have to fix because of a surge of anger.

  • While I appreciate this video. This notion of child or lack of it prior to the 18th century is purely from the perspective of Eurocentric cultural narrative. Pretty much the rest of the world from native Americans, Asia Africa, pacific cultures and aborigine and mauri cultures all recognized and regarded children as precious and different from adults. In many unique and compelling ways. It would be helpful to put that disclaimer up that these notions discussed in terms of recognition and reverence of children is coming from one specific cultural perspective of Eurocentric cultural normatives

  • I don't agree with how this is stated - finding something it's most cute when it's at it's most miserable, or saying that we want to control it is the dark side of the feelings helplessness induces. I'd say it's much more fair to say that the altruistic end of finding something cute is you feel the most PROTECTIVE of it when it's at its most miserable. I don't feel like I want to nibble the legs of a crying baby - I want to figure out how to make them not cry. This is however a possibly interesting insight into narcissism. Perhaps if feelings of protecting something and controlling it are similar in our brains, then when you're brain is broken, it heads over to the darker side of control. If the brain is broken it might also harm cute things because when the brain tosses in the violent thought to counter the cute overload, instead of finding a harmless way to indulge, such as playfully nibbling at the cute thing, they DO the violent impulse. I think I'll search for some research to back these thoughts. This has given my brain something to chew on.

You surely have noticed how the news about some war is coming in a form "children died in a ...". I'm sure that plenty remembers how the image of a child was abused in Aleppo. • I see term papers for the next 50 years discussing the nature of the child. I think that our collective reaction to Baby Yoda is much more nuanced than ‘it has big eyes and is miserable.’ By the way, using the word ‘miserable’ falls far from the mark. Misery to me entails soul crushing, long term barely controlled pain and is often caused by another person who wishes me harm or doesn’t care if I am harmed. I’m reminded of the movie, MISERY. Well, anyway. What words would you, dear reader, choose to describe how Baby Yoda makes you feel? What is it about him that attracts you? For myself it goes back to the first scene when the baby is revealed. It is such an incredible, important, unexpected reveal. An instantly Iconic moment. I’ve watched FRworld videos of the reactions of viewers watching The Mandalorian and it appears that we all fell in love at first sight. He is so winsome, so joyful, and so dang little. It is as though the first time he looks at you it makes you feel like he sees the real you. I don’t imagine that there are too many people that really dislike the little womp-rat.
