Wind turbines have emergency exits, but they might not be for the reason you think. • Thanks to Octopus Energy: octopus.energy/octopus-fan-club/ (This video isn't sponsored, but obviously they did let me go up their wind turbine.)

  • I couldn't find a way to fit this into the video, but rather wonderfully, this turbine is called Octopus Energy's "#1 Fan". Thanks to all the team there, and the rope access team at EWT. This wasn't sponsored, and Octopus had no control over the final video, but obviously they did let me go up their conveniently-branded wind turbine in an effort to boost their brand. (If any other companies would like to show me around their conveniently-branded spectacular facilities, they should definitely get in touch...!)

  • So the emergency escape system is a RAT with a double rope abseil system who conveniently happens to be there the day you need an escape? Even though the guy said the emergency escape system is an inertia real descender? Also, in the UK, a HART, SORT, mountain rescue, or SAR Helicopter can and do rescue injured personnel from a turbine, including offshore turbine installations

  • This video proves how unpractical and inefficient wind turbines are. Each turbine requires 15 years of uninterrupted running in order to offset the carbon emissions required to produce said wind turbine but that is seldom the case, they will last 7-8 years at best. Wind turbines constantly break, require constant maintenance, repair, and replacement parts where it's not even viable to keep making them until they can actually run for the 15 years necessary.

  • Should have had this in The Netherlands. Two young men died when the wind turbine caught fire while they were on top. They had the choice. Try to descend the ladder and burn in the flames or jump off from the top and hope you make it. One jumped but did not make it. The other, who was a 21 year old mechanic, tried the ladder and died in the flames. It was a sad day

  • Stepping off the edge is the scary part of any abseil. Once you get your legs free and you can still feel you have weigh, especially around where the ropes fasten to your harness, it becomes fun. But how I hate those few seconds going over the edge...

  • We manufacture these emergency descent systems here in India for a German company, and gets installed in all these wind turbines. It’s got an internal gearing and brake system which works on centripetal force and slows you down if you go faster than a set velocity. Quite clever little mechanism, but has to be made precisely, somebody’s life depends on it. Happy to see this video!

    Gautham RamGautham RamIl y a 2 jours
    • P. S there is also a high speed electric chain hoist in the nacelle of the wind turbine which is used to lift and lower tools and equipment. We also manufacture the chain hoist for many wind turbine OEMs, also for EWT :)

  • You should at least train with it more just because it’s the last resort does not mean it shouldn’t be practiced

    TempVoTempVoIl y a 2 jours
  • You don’t train with it often because ideally you shouldn’t need it!? Sorry but that’s a real piss poor excuse for not training on something that could save your life. Buildings have fire drills every 6 months but I can’t even remember the last time I heard of a building needing to actually be evacuated because of a fire.
