  • If you can't create a dynamic pattern, the next best thing is a rearrangement of the static patterns found in a dynamic one's wake. Hollywood is less dynamic than it could be, because it has large payrolls and many people's jobs and livelihoods to consider. Star Wars isn't cutting-edge, and may never be again.

  • Snoke should've been the villain, nuff said. Just have it so the snoke we saw wasn't really him, just an empty shell puppeted by the man, hell you could even probably bullshit something about him intentionally atttempting to recreate past events (the first order, the resistance, darth vader/kylo ren) as part of some weird scheme, maybe to create a force user on the same level as Luke Skywalker or something I dunno.

  • and yes, Rey doesn't have a personal conenction to Palpatine. Not only has she never met the man, but she knows him only as Space Hitler, essentially. Luke had personally faced with Vader BEFORE the reveal (in fact, the reveal happens in the tail end of the big climactic battle as a capstone to the event) so having it just casually revealed to Rey when she hasn't even met Palpatine yet makes the reveal fall flat as it means very little to her. It exists JUST to fix what the last film revealed.

  • Rian Johnson made the only decent sequel movie. Why let anyone be a hero ? Naw, literally if you aren't a skywalker or a palpatine no one cares about you ! Why have multiple fake out deaths for minor characters? Why did we have the other 2 movies if Palpatine was just building a massive fleet regardless ? My personal theory is they didn't know what to really do when Carrie Fisher died , thus the last movie is just whatever. Anyway my ranking of Star Wars is now 4 > 5> 6 > 8 > Rouge One , etc But I will say these movies introduced us to some amazing actors. Adam Driver's Marriage Story is great

  • The one thing I disagree with is the "I know" line being a hollow repetition of the famous line in Episode 5. Yes, it was definitely a reference, but if there is one thing the new trilogy did (sort of) correctly, it is Kylo Ren and his relationship with his parents. Kylo is torn between the light and the dark, or rather the expectations that are bestowed upon him by the light due to his heritage, and the freedom the dark side can provide (which is deceitful, since in itself it is another chain of heritage). He kills the expectations placed upon him, both literally and metaphorically, by killing his father, but he does not feel any catharsis. In fact, he is only torn worse now, he regrets his own decisions and develops away from the darkness over time. The "I know" is the true catharsis for Kylo Ren, who can then revert to being Ben Solo again, since despite all of the bad things he has done, Han accepts his son, his regrets, his feelings, not unlike what Luke did for Vader. This is the one scene that genuinely moved me in the prequel trilogy.

  • Even though the second movie wasn’t well received, I liked the idea of the story taking a turn to be a bit darker and less repetitive. The prequel did that repeat of history so repeating it again would have felt a bit stale. If they flipped the story as a dream of the republic being corrupted by the past with the antagonists being rebels with a similar dream that hits t main characters as them becoming what they fought to destroy. They could end the series with the republic falling apart with no new empire. The realization that history will repeat itself.

  • I was actually satisfied by this movie. Yes, there are things that weren't good about it, like the knife thing and Palpatine being alive again (although, we could say Darth Maul had a "worst" death than Palpatine, and actually survived). I even liked TLJ, just skipping all the casino scenes. The thing is Star Wars movies aren't a masterpiece, they all have their flaws OT, PT and obviously ST. To me it seems we watch them with pink glasses, and it's ok, I will never stop watching them. It's just that they aren't perfect. Rey was looking for her own identity, everyone telling her what she is, and what not, and in the end she gets to choose. That very cringe moment for most people was actually a good one for me, it's like "I am this, this is what I want, I no longer care about the past. I'm at peace with it". And that's how I feel about this ending, I'm at peace.

  • I'm not a hardcore fan. I believe I only saw The Empire Strikes Back in the theater. But I have seen them all and I am a fan of science fiction in general, so I thought that, being the last movie in the series, this one deserved to be seen at the theater. And what a piece of crap it was. I've seen Star Trek episodes that were more imaginative (yeah I am scraping the bottom of the barrel). The return of Palpatine was in itself a stupid enough plot point, but the lowest point was the reveal of him being Rey's grandfather. Hey they could have called it Return of the Emperor. Or maybe Return of the Ewoks, with those asinine birds from the island. Or maybe Return of the Yet More Expensive Weapon Platform in the History of the Universe with the One Stupid Weakness to Wipe It Out.

  • The reason why J.J shamelessly copying A New Hope in The Force Awakens failed miserably is how he failed to understand how Lucas did it. While Lucas did take different elements from The Original Trilogy and put them there it was done for the sake of story by showcasing how similar yet different Anakin and his son Luke are by demonstrating how Anakin's love for Padme allowed him to be vulnerable to manipulation from Palpatine because of the Jedi's strict stance on having no romance that could result in serious retaliation against him and Padme if found out all the while having no other close friends to rely on except for Obi Wan and he was busy with other Jedi activities which resulted in him being eventually corrupted by Palpatine into wiping out the Jedi Order. With Luke although he lacked a romantic partner so to speak (unless you count the Legends continuity) he had great bonds with his close friends to help him and unlike Anakin didn't fall to the Dark Side because of his desire to protect his said friends and loved ones which made it impossible for him to be manipulated by Palpatine. The Force Awakens just copies A New Hope because of nostalgia and only nostalgia and that to me had a major part in ruining The Sequel Trilogy.

  • The problem is every character has to regress for this stupid story. Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren all had arcs that were ruined by the third movie. Rey was obsessed with her family in the first film but moved on to wanting Luke to be her surrogate father by the end. In the second movie she is rejected by Luke, see's her hero as flawed but unlike Kylo Ren she forgives him. In the end Kylo exposes that she has no family linage hoping that it would weaken her enough to give into him but it doesn't she stands on her own. Then all of a sudden in the third movie, she goes back to this obsession with bloodlines. Kylo Ren Was a Darth Vadar fanboy in the first film and proved that by the end by killing his own father. In the second movie he questions his judgement of his idols just as he did with Luke. He rejects all of them and decides to make his own path killing his former master and fighting for himself. Then in the third film, the Emperor is back and all of a sudden he goes back to being an errand boy. So much so, that he even fixes his Vadar helmet and wears it again. Finn is the biggest tragedy of all because this was a truly original character. If Rey is Luke, and Poe is Han, and Ben is Vadar, then who is Finn. He was his own character and they wasted him. The first film he's a storm trooper who doesn't want to kill so he escapes with Poe. He is given a name and finds friends, maybe even family. The guy who's had nothing to live for is fighting with his new friends, even risking getting himself killed by using a lightsaber to protect Rey. Then in the second film, he's not worried about the revolution, he just wants to live. So when things get bad he tries to save Rey so they can escape but Rose shows him how much bigger than them all of this is. By the end of the film he refers to himself as "rebel scum" and even tries to sacrifice himself to save the rebels. On top of that they kept hinting that he maybe has force powers and set up possible romances with both Rey and Rose. But what happens with all of that in the final film... NOT A DAMN THING. The character with the most potential of any in the new trilogy, is nothing more that a Rey cheerleader who keeps screaming her name through the whole movie.

  • This entire movie is basically crammed ideas that JJ wanted for the entire trilogy. To his credit, he does pump out some good work - I think maybe Rian Johnson’s TLJ really derailed this whole trilogy and JJ just couldn’t save it lol.

    ninafrostninafrostIl y a mois
    • Cloud Seeker totally agree, i hated TLJ a lot after I saw it so I tend to attribute most blame to Rian Johnson. There’s times to do clever subversion and this was not it. They had the chance to consult George Lucas while writing for ideas on what to do with Luke. If anyone what happened to Luke during those times, he would have known. I really hate how Rian turned Luke into a bitter old hermit suckling milk. Worst character assassination I’ve ever seen. Not only that but they had a wealth of material to look for and take inspiration from even if they’re no longer part of canon (Legends/EU) just to get a basic idea of how to use the Force in SW. I don’t mind Rey being the main character of the series but the reason why I disliked her is because she is written poorly with no development and very little personality. She started the trilogy off the same person that she is on Tatooine. All side characters got shafted whenever she was on screen with them to show how much of an awesome Jedi she is. Kathleen Kennedy should have never hired two different directors with different writing styles. It worked for ESB, but that’s because the director respected original source material. They also hired Chris Terrio as one of the writers for SW and he had a hand in creating the two godawful movies Batman v Superman and Justice League - not a great portfolio to hire a writer who wrote two movies DC fans hated. He certainly didn’t help the SW saga. You’re right in that JJ blatantly copy pasted plot from OT to ST - including the cringey return of Palpatine and the lacklustre character arc of Kylo Ren being redeemed. I blame both directors more as they had a hand in directly shaping these movies and turned Disney SW into a mess, pissing off fans of Prequels and OT and destroying old characters in favour of a Mary Sue they concocted. If they could have written better and actually took input from George Lucas, it wouldn’t be as bad as what it turned out to be.

      ninafrostninafrostIl y a mois
    • I think both Rian and JJ deserves blame, but most goes to Kathleen. Kathleen have this idea that they need to herald the strong female characters and make everything female and feminist. That is why Rey is the main character. That is why Rogue One had a female lead. That is why Solo was surrounded or worked for strong female character. That is why Leia should have been the only OG character alive if the actor didn't die between the movies. That is also why Leia became such a powerful force user from nothing. She even wanted Mandalorian to be about a women with a child she had to protect. Kathleen should also had stopped this whole thing from becoming this mess, but she has a softspot for Rian and Rian allowed them both to get their wet dreams in terms of characters. JJ Abrams deserve blame for not even trying something new. TFA was just episode 4 with a new cast. Same plot, almost the same character archetypes, samey plot locations. No risks. No plan. A end everyone already know about. But failed to give Rey a hero's journey. Rian deserves blame for being proud in subverting expectations. Which means. Giving the fans the finger. He tied up all plot threads and made it near impossible to make the last movie as most if not all plot threads had been completed. However JJ know exactly what Rian was going to do and didn't stop it, so Rian is not the only one to be blamed here.

  • I think the movie gets a little TOO much hate. A lot of the video focuses on rehashing the Star Wars history. That can be said about Star Wars as a whole from the Old Republic to post RoTJ, even before the Sequels. Star Wars always reminded me of Bioshock Infinite after I made the connection. There's always a hero ship filled with an unlikely team, There's always a planet or galaxy threatening weapon, There's always the good vs the bad (be it republic and jedi or siths and empires). We'll have to see how Post TRoS goes, but with how grand of a scale it was, it felt to me like we finally had some closure with this last film. It wasn't a Republic fleet that destroyed the star forge, or a rebel fleet that destroyed the deathstar pt 2, this was the Galaxy as a whole fighting a threatening sith empire, the battle was a little lack luster but from the story perspective, it has some finality. Like I said, we'll have to see what SW looks like in 10 years and how it repeats itself again, but I think this was a fine final Skywalker chapter

    NickNickIl y a mois
    • "A lot of the video focuses on rehashing the Star Wars history. That can be said about Star Wars as a whole from the Old Republic to post RoTJ, even before the Sequels." - Apart from that they didn't copy the previous entries beat for beat. FTA is just A New Hope with a paint job. TLJ is ESB and ROTJ all pushed into one. The Old Republic didn't focus on a young adult on a desert planet joining a rebellion to blow up a planet or moon sized super weapon. The attack of the clones was not focused on the rebellion fleeing from Empire on a white planet and having the rebellion taking a heavy beating. The older entries does not do what the sequels do. They do not replay the whole thing again as if it was new. The prequels had a story they wanted to tell and built on the history. They didn't copy it like the sequels did. "There's always a hero ship filled with an unlikely team, There's always a planet or galaxy threatening weapon, There's always the good vs the bad (be it republic and jedi or siths and empires)." - Where is the team, the hero ship and the planet or galaxy threatening weapons in the prequels? You follow Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme to establish their connections. But they are not really working as a team. Obi-Wan is working to figure out what is going on. Anakin is being manipulated and groomed by Palpatine. Padme is the love interest of Anakin but also the reason Anakin is able to be groomed. There is no "hero ship" and they often never work together. There definitely is no Planet or Galaxy threatening weapon. I think you are talking out of your arse here. Do I also have to point out that the "good" actually fails in the prequels? How is this rehashing the same thing when it is the opposite? Also seeing the light side as the "good" side that is equal to the Jedi is kind of a modern thing. The "light side" was meant to represent joy. Something you have to work hard for to get but will last forever. The "dark side" is meant to represent material things that are easy to get. Because they are easy to get you get greedy to get more, but also scared of losing them. That is the conflict with Light vs Dark side. Everlasting Joy vs temporary and instant joy. I am sorry but I think you are really grasping at straws. Also games are not the cannon version of the story. So it isn't very honest presenting them as if it is the cannon when it isn't.

  • It's not controversial to me. Only my opinion matters. 😎 I feel a bit for Disneyfilm, trying to justify how to carry on the future of a galaxy that found peace through revolution, with a name like _Star Wars_ . Likely, there will be stars and there will be wars. They could have made it more introspective, belying the importance of fighting one's own war within instead of a war without, but... Rey's dark arc was slapped onto _Rise_ in the form of uncertainty, which should've been addressed and evolved in _Awakens_ yet was given a verified nudge via her lack of heritage in _Last_ . Instead Disneyfilm didn't want its heroine to be too dark or conflicted at all (or of course even die), because it falls counter to the marketability of their Disneyfilm Princess brand. Regarding "I know", I took it to mean that Kylo was sorry about everything. Regarding Palpatine's need for Kylo to kill Rey, that ploy was meant to deepen her turn to the Dark Side by her killing Kylo, making her more susceptible to Palpatine's resurrection in her body. It's a storyline I would've gone with, but not used Palpatine at all - instead, just the singular intangibility of all Dark Side spirits roaming through purgatory, unable to become one with the Force as Jedi can. I also would've allowed it to succeed, thus turning a damaged Kylo into the good guy. But then, that ain't the Disneyfilm nostalgia brand... and I would've definitely gone a far different route overall than what the Resistance trilogy became, but the aforementioned is me trying to fix this movie. 15:08 No, it's become Disneyfilm's own undoing. _Star Wars_ is forever.

  • You have totally missed the point of all these destroyed franchises. They were not destroyed because of a need for nostalgia--that was put in merely to bring guys to see the film on opening weekend. The producers knew they could not keep the old fans after the first weekend because the old fans were, by and large, male. Men with analytical minds. Men who understood the classic 'hero's journey' because in some small way, their life experience has been a reflection of that hero's journey. They grew up strong, they were ready to leave heir father's home and strike out on their own. They faced obstacles they had to overcome--starting a business or simply finding a job they could do without much resentment, find a mate and become a father like their father before them--sure, they never had to fight a Kraken like Perseus did to save Andromeda, but battling for keep the wolf back from the door is tough too. The producers of the ruined franchises understood this, and they were willing to sacrifice these long-term fans in order to cultivate a NEW crop of fans. Women the studies had shown them were now the majority of the American population and thus, these producers saw them as a market to be harvested. There was a problem, however. Females, throughout history have not had to take the 'hero's journey'. The rewards found at the end of those journeys the men took were usually simply 'shared' with the women (think of Perseus and Andromeda for example, did he kick her to the background and claim all the glory for himself? No, he did not, and even the stars were named for both those women--Andromeda and her mother, the vain and foolish Cassiopeia. We can look at Marc Antony and Cleopatra VII while he was rising in ROME, she rose with him. Not because she was doing anything (well she was letting him nail her) to bring that glory on herself, but because she was standing in the reflected glory of a victorious warrior. Throughout history we see that women are GIVEN what the man has struggled and--often--died to achieve. Henry VIII's 2nd daughter, Elizabeth I. After Henry's male family members won the crown during the War of the Roses, and Henry himself defended it against France, she was given a peaceful realm to rule, and while ruling it, she did nothing to ensure a peaceful transition of power after her death. She did not produce an heir, and seem unconcerned that a NEW Civil War was likely because of her failure to do so. So, when you call these 'new' heroines 'Mary Sues' it is only because you do not want to face the fact that WOMEN don't easily relate to 'struggle' since throughout history everything they was was basically handed to them. Washing clothing in a creek too much work? Whine about it and a MAN will create the Washing Machine. Mending clothing too hard? Whine about it and a MAN will invent a sewing machine. Cooking over an open fire too labor intensive? Whine about it, and some MAN will invent a stove--still to much work? Whine some more and he will create a Microwave instant oven. What do you say to that? Husband: What's for dinner? W: Hey, you know how to use that microwave as well as I do go fix something for yourself. So, don't expect the 'hero's journey to make a come back, because the new way forward is 'Give the Girl everything she needs right at the start, and point out that the LAST thing she needs is a MAN, and sit back and enjoy the ride as she PROVES that women and men are totally equal. Doubt that? Compare the NEW and IMPROVED Mulan to the version in the cartoon. Notice that NOW she is a SUPER WOMAN with the Inhuman power igniter of--no not the Terrigen Mist, but instead the Chi. Yep, it now instills in one SUPER X-MEN like powers.

  • Remember when Star Wars was just a movie. Just a fun movie with good characters, good lines, and a good story. And wasn’t a multi-billion dollar IP that constantly has millions up in arms about something? Neither do I

  • The difference between Lucas and Abrams is that while Lucas has imagination and creativity and a vision of what he can bring that's new, Abrams was the guy who fucking remade Star Trek, but with lens flares.

  • I think it was combination of a caustic fandom that refused to entertain thoughts of Star Wars going in any direction different from their narrow expectations, and Disney needing to create as safe a film as possible. After how clear it was that TLJ was neutered during production, and how outraged the fandom was at even the slightest deviation from Star Wars As They Know It, Disney had no choice but to make a straight-down-the-middle fanfic. Star Wars fans have only themselves to blame for Star Wars ending so terribly.

  • Star wars KOTOR had more weight on plots why not that movie instead of solo...or say palpatine daughter (rey's mom) found a starforge, a mindless sith drone controlled by palpatine clone...anything is better than 7,8,9...star wars is forever ruined for me... 😠

  • Unpopular opinion: The Last Jedi was the best Star Wars movie since Revenge of the Sith and Rian Johnson should have directed Episode 9 as well.

  • No we’re not it deserves it for Disney not having a plan and bringing back palpatine AND doing it in the opening crawl and all of the f***ing plot convenience in this movie.

  • Whole trilogy is a horrific mess. Worse still it’s trashed all 9 now. I hated the Last Jedi. The cuts, reshoots, re-edits, it’s all so painfully obvious. Marvel is the cool kid on the block now, Star Wars will never recover it’s former glory. Well done Disney, your screwed it right up.
