  • For a very, very long video essay, only a very, very long comment will do. On the whole, I think your analysis was spot on, even being somewhat kind to the absolute botch jobs that both directors did, confused visions or not. J.J. Abrams' predilection for thrillingly incomprehensible action scenes paid off at no point whatsoever. Nor did the sudden escalation of the Force powers at the very end such as a force lightning storm, force life draining and force healing. The movies felt more like terrible video game spoofs of the Star Wars canon. Moving on to the rewrite, however, which I liked a lot better, I still have some pointers. The story is good, making good use of old and new characters, but the pacing of the first movie - as you describe it - feels off. Maybe it's because you are only summarizing some bits and teasing out other parts which gives it a lopsided reading. But I think you need a bit more space between the scenes where Luke is looking at the door in the book and when he finds it in the Jedi temple. Foreshadowing can work wonders, but the reader/listener/viewer actually has to have questions regarding the foreshadowed thing before its secret is revealed. Mind you, the fact that you've managed narrative tension already is a major step up from the sequel trilogy as is. Now, why be coy? Just give Poe and Finn their same-sex relationship/dynamic already. It's not something Disney will ever do because it scares the million moms, but you don't need to bow to those rules! And it doesn't even have to be glaringly obvious at the start. If Finn is indeed a career storm trooper, he will idolize Kylo Ren, so he will either feel conflicted that Kylo has respect for Poe - Republic scum! - or Finn might feel jealous because he has never been appreciated or been approached by Kylo in that way. Either of these are merely forms of sublimated desire though. And that can be revealed in the third film, when either Finn or Poe makes a heroic effort to save the other. There are other ways to exteriorise an attraction and to evince a bond of increasing trust and friendship, which is marred by their conflicting loyalties. I'm not going to go into them. But it should be a fun relationship to write out in full. I lóve the Dooku reference. I cannot say how emphatically underused that character was even in the prequels. And it has nothing to do with my adulation of Christopher Lee. Nothing at all. At all! The twist on the entire sequel being not good v bad or bad v good, but good and bad v worse... I don't mind it, per se. It's been done before, but the devil is in the details, so execution matters more than the idea or trope itself having been done before. However, the "worse" being the Yuuzhan Vong? I really meh-ed them in the books. Their divergent kinds of technology and back-story were wonderfully done. But there was always something that has rubbed me wrong about how, due to the Force creating some kind of bubble around the Star Wars galaxy, they were an excession point, something that could not be foreseen. There are too many inconsistencies for why the Yuuzhan Vong can be so terribly advanced and yet have such a weird internal societal structure. Not to mention that they are apparently Force-empty, but still outperform Jedi at times... Besides, why would Dooku immediately assume that the Yuuzhan Vong are extragalactic? Over 1/3th of the Star Wars galaxy is un- or underexplored and it is not unthinkable that there might be some intragalactic threat that could loom over the whole civil war. Why not simply bring back the Sith race? Mind you, no matter how much I love Dooku, I have a feeling that the inserted sequence showing Dooku's story would be too long of an expositional dump. It might crowd out the character arcs. It might be better if Luke only finds a few artifacts in the Jedi vault. He takes the holocron (those contain vast amounts of data, so discovering the exact piece of crucial information seems a bit too fortunate) and pockets it. Then he sees the control panel with the sentry drones' information which flashes in red "Incursion detected". We don't yet know what the threat is, but we get a feeling that it is not the First Order. The scene ends with Luke getting to work trying to figure it out, but the viewer doesn't get all the answers just yet. Think Godzilla. You don't want to show the big animatronic too early or too soon. The cut to Kylo/Finn/Poe on the planet is brilliant. 'Nuff said. Both Rey and Kylo's arcs are tons better. You did a wickedly good job at that. Mirroring their need for confirmation and how losing/gaining that makes them question who they are. I can already write the scene in my head where Rey confronts Luke. "I loved you like a father, but I was nothing to you," would be an overriding sentiment, even if it needn't be spelled out so literally. And it would really pack a punch. There is one theme here which you could/should play with more: how love in the prequels was almost a forbidden emotion for the Jedi, a teaching which eventually broke the Jedi Order; how in the original trilogy it was the saving grace for Darth Vader thanks to Luke; and how Luke's inability to love a terrifying child made him a bad person. And not just a bad person, but a bad Jedi as well. A good Jedi should also need to be a good person, and love is an intrinsic part of human nature. That is one element that I have found has always been missing, and was probably shown most clearly by Qui-gon Jinn. But they killed him off in the Phantom Menace, so there went that theme. I do take umbrage at the "Kylo Ren burning down Luke's temple" bit. It's too reminiscent of Anakin killing the padawans on Coruscant. It needn't happen like that. I would rather think that Kylo enticed some of the other students away, just like Khan (Kahn?) enticed him, and that either Kylo or Khan gives up the location of Luke's temple to bounty hunters, leading to a slaughter when Luke returns. The aim would be for Luke to believe that the Republic had a hand in destroying his temple, and that he believes that Kylo is lost to him, like many of the other padawans. That seems like a far more interesting way of having Luke lose his first students. And it sets up a lot more tension regarding their possible confrontation in later films. Another thought: the mission he was on could have been to find Cal? Or to meet up with Rey's father? All else aside, I do like the idea of Darth Khan for many reasons: her enticing Kylo, her being Rey's mother (and actually loving her daughter, despite being so absolutely evil), and how her affection for Rey detracts her from her other duties, including Kylo's training. But do be careful not to infantilize Kylo. Right now it sounds like he's basically throwing an identity crisis tantrum because he was not given enough attention. I wouldn't mind if Kylo and Rey had a romantic relationship in this version of the sequel (whereas I did mind how they forced it on us in the existing one), which would almost mirror Poe and Finn's because Kylo would be jealous of Rey getting all the attention, but for almost one entire film long, he was her mentor and she blossomed under her teachings, and that still makes him feel proud. Darth Khan did not only take away the promise of Kylo being the de facto heir to the First Order, she also took away his padawan, friend and someone he has come to love for her strength, her skill and her devotion to his teachings. That would be a perfect reason for Rey to eventually side with him against her own mother. Aside from the reveal about her father. That one works too. I have to be honest though, I had tears towards the ending, with the temple being restored. I think you could keep the Cal figure alive (if you're already killing off Luke) to serve as a kind of "triumvirate" of Jedi masters. Beyond that, the new Jedi Order should be grey Jedi Order, including not just those on the side of the Light, eschewing all mention and teachings of the Dark side. That has always seemed to me to be the more natural conclusion to the whole Sith/Jedi schism. All in all, bravo though. You did a fantastic job, both on the video and on the rewrite. I would like to suggest a few emended titles for the three movies in light of your revision: 7. A New Threat 8. The Last Days of the Republic 9. The Rise of the Jedi I'm not married to them, but I like how they mirror the other trilogies. P.S. Thanks for reading all this. You can have a cookie! 🍪

  • I think maintaining more of the characters from the sequels would be interesting. Maybe instead of that Alien Race use Palpatine's final order? It could have been Palpatine's back up in case order 66 didn't work and Doku discovering it is what caused his switch to the Darkside. The raw power in his reserved Final Order forced his hand. I feel like that idea would have to be fleshed out a lot more to be workable but Idk seems interesting. Finn fighting essentially Red Stormtroopers could also add to the conflict in his character.

  • 3:52 - It didn't force him to do so, in my opinion, Trevorov made a perfect episode 9 (for the disney canon, that is), because it didn't have to have Snoke, Palpatine, or anyone else, who would be above Kylo. Palpatine died in episode 6, Snoke, who wasn't anyones pupet or clone, but the real supreme leader was deceitfully deceived, betrayed and murdered over the belief of his infallibility (that was the one, only one thing i LOVED in the last jedi), and Kylo is now the main bad guy so situation simmilar to Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus in the Legacy Of The Force (I think), where hes master, Darth Lumiya is as well dead and he takes over (so Collin was deffinitly inspired by LOTF). And also an interesting feature is, Kylo doesn't wanna be sith, but interpretes dark side in hes own way (where of corse in ROS he agrees on the promise of becoming a sith). That would be a lot better than just a very bad version of dark empire comics. I think, due to their lack of originality and fear of it, JJ decided that Kylo has to be another Vader (weaker anyway) who isn't the real bad guy, ho has a guy above who makes him do cruel things etc, and of corse, who has good in him and is redeemed. That's why i consider the EU real canon to me. Cause it doesn't go the same direction all the time, and always shows a new story, not a new version of old ones. Who agrees, gives a like (:

Additionally, Disney proves that it isnt the company that is the problem, rather than the people entrusted with the production. Rogue One, Mandaloria, Clone Wars S7, all great thing. Only the sequels are bad but there is more than enough good content. People only tend to focus on the negatives.

On this scale 14k ships would probably just a puny little shit against a united republic. They would probably have 50 to 100 thousand up to millions of ships In the starwars universe are around 50 million systems (wich woudl rpibably mean 50 times 5 or 10) And this took me one Google search.

  • That was a pretty great idea overall. I was actually emotional by the end with all the force ghosts. The only thing that I think doesn’t work is how easily Kylo goes back to the light. He didn’t really have a great reason like Rey. Personally, I think that he should either start a vendetta against khan, still as a vengeful sith, or maybe even make himself a grey Jedi of sorts after seeing the misdoings of both the light and the dark

  • Star Wars has become trite and trivial, as if they dumbed it down for the lowest common denominator, being either little kids (no offense to kids) or Trump voters (LOL). There is so much faux emotion via the original sound track being thrown in at times in an effort to whip up some nostalgic buy-in for a mystical religion no one in the audience buys anymore. I am sick to death of the stupid amoral "Force" that can be used for good or evil, a non-conscious energy that is there for anyone who thinks the purpose of life is to be able to move objects with your mind or swing a light saber around. Of course, all such theatrics are really totally irrelevant to a good life, so why are we supposed to identify and admire these dysfunctional people who don't seem able to prioritize what matters in life? I'd like a character to respond to some platitude from Yoda with "Shove the Force up your little green ass and then spin like a top!" In the original movies, the Dark Empire colors appeared to be red, blue and white. I thought an amazing plot twist would be if Trump zombies turned the USA into a fascist police state that evolved into the Dark Empire in space. It was essentially Nazi's in Space. I wonder if the Death Star served saurkraut and frats in the cafeteria? Everyone became a mere caricature of the originals, like mindless ghosts who repeat the same actions. Ho hum. Another group of storm trooper cannon fodder, some more high level goons, and the stalwart youths in the rebellion who thwart them yet again. Been there, seen that. It just all seems so Disneyfied, like a sci-fi TV show for kids on Nickelodeon, so shallow and so homogenized for a mass audience. Yawn. I checked out a couple movies ago. When I was a college student when the original movie came out in 1977, this was cutting edge. Now it is white bread pablum and I am surprised that the movies don't have commercial breaks for children's sugary cereals and action figures that have the approval of the Parent-Teachers Association.

While I realise this can never be a film, but I would buy a novel (or novels) that told this story. I love the ending, and it would do a great job of setting-up future films and spin-offs by having the temple reestablished. Finn was indeed completely wasted character. I don't know if you followed the Twitter nonsense, but Boyega had a bit of an awakening on this matter. Despite critics of this shambolic trilogy being dismissed as racist/sexist man babies, he actually came to realise that these supposed bigots were upset that his character was pissed away by Abrams and Johnson.

Expanding on the idea first found in the clone wars. Similar in impact to that of the first season of legend of Korra. Edit: after all, all the wars and loss of civilian life has been because of the Sith vs. the Jedi. I am sure people would be upset with such a powerful group.

  • If you want to praise the prequels (and that should be done sparingly forget star wars they're poorly made films) what can be said is that at least there was ONE guy behind a vision. The vision wasn't very good but at least it wasn't a board of Disney directors and stupid Kathleen Kennedy. My theory is that they should have started a new story from scratch without Luke, Han and Leia because incorporating them at 70 years old just didnt work, at least not in this story they had zero agency.

  • Hey guys, it’s the future. Dave filonis "The Jedi" from Mandalorian is essentially a better movie than the sequels. There’s hope again.

  • All this to me just sound like crying from someone who want a new movies without actually nothing new, pissed off fan mad because somebody decide to talk about his religion in different way. Most changes he suggest in this video would have a problem down in line with rest of story. Change part with Luke and Ben and you have a problem later because Ben have no reason to fight a dark side, something he embrace just because he felt betrayed in beginning. Give Finn more to think about his "brothers" change almost every scene he become resistance hero later. Wanting a Luke as prime character? I'm not even bother comment on that, nothing scream fanboy more than that. Only mistakes I see are product of trying to get in ass of these hardcore fans. That's why all old characters are exact copy of ones before, I'm glad they didn't push it even further and build a third death star just to give some old fan something to jerk off in dark corner of movie theater. If they skip half of old characters all three movies will be much better, giving them more screen time to better develop a new ones, one thing I agree was little bit short.

  • Sounds a very interesting story! there's just one thing i'm not convinced. Why would people in the new republic think the Jedis are bad?? the empire lasted what, 30 years? 40? there's a whole generation that saw it rise and fall during their lifetime, that generation knew jedis were a good force and then stabbed in the back by this tyrant. Their sons would know that too...

  • The reason these films failed is solely because of Woke culture. The sakes as CPT Marvel, ghost busters and many more. Hollywood is dead. It’s time has come and gone forever

  • About writing: In university if you copy more than 60% you are expelled for copying work... If you come up with something new, you fail and are given another Chance... Therefore Abrahams movie is worse than Johnsons(I know unpopular opinion) but I'd rather See someone try and fail than a horrible remake with holow and bad executed Charakters. Nothing makes sense in this trillogy, the complete Plot sucks. The Team of Autors fail to understand Star Wars... This whole trillogy is not star wars and therefore I don't like the complete trilogy. Jyan Johnson did still better than JJ Abrahams, because JJ Abrahams didn't even try... Lucas was a great and creative mind and therefore the Prequels work. He understood the Star Wars Universe. I mean he created it. Short said, Disney fucked it up ...
