  • I always thought All-Star was a critique of all humanity. Like, at first some "she" was calling the narrator a loser, was actually an allegory to mother nature, that as absurdism defends, was always revealing what humans were basically: just a bunch of animals. But then, we discovered that had a lot to do and see, so, driven by curiosity, we embarked in a quest for gratefulness, running as far as we could from our primitive roots, taking some back streets, even though we knew deep down it was ethically inappropriate, but we didn't care because just cannot bear the angst of not going and not knowing things, because deep down we are an insecure species, that just has to affirm its own power and control over reality by knowledge, even though this path has taken us to destroy our own biosphere, ignoring are own limitations as, well, animals. Later in the song, somebody asks the narrator some change for gas because this person just gotta get away from that place. That place would Earth, that we are trying to escape to be away from its inevitable demise. And the gas, in the case, is literally carbon-based fuel. Pretty self-explanatory on that. But seriously, why the fuck Smash Mouth would try to put a secret message in a song even though they know not a lot of people will take´em seriously, especially knowing that they are famous for just selling their music rights to not always good family movies and for doing some not very appreciated cover.

  • i disagree with the overall message of this video, and how it takes the easy way put and punches down. I feel for a pop band to deal with these topics while still being way more palpable for a mainstream is audience impressive. Especially more then a guy with a beard who was a philosophy minor at university calling it dumb." Like your not wrong, your just an asshole"

  • I don't know, I think sometimes people who are uneducated can get a bad rap for being dumb. There's a reason Smash Mouth connected with so many people, and it has at least something to do with these grand philosophical ideas, so just because they didn't know about or engage with philosophers doesn't mean they're not tapping into those concepts in their own way. Of course, this makes their intentions way more difficult to read than normal, because they don't use widely used philosophical terms to express their philosophy, making it difficult to parse exactly what they're communicating.

  • So, Jared has a pretty important insight here: MUSIC AND COUNTER CULTURE: Is It Deep or Dumb? I mean, basically every counter-cultural group is a strike-back against "false" or "empty" cultural norms and a demand for "authenticity" (or "reality" in whatever terms they use) in general. This, in turn, is heavily co-opted by musical groups (and other related artistic movements) and movements in general, until you've got this weird feedback loop where generic and "just like everyone else"-style music makes demands and encouragement to "uniqueness" or "authenticity" (or whatever that particular genre of music or collection of would-be individualists with similar tastes uses to fill-in for those gaps). This cycle, itself, seems absurd (in the grander scheme, as well as in the specific) appearing much like a fruitless search for meaning in an uncaring universe without actual meaning. But does it have no meaning? I'm not sure. In either embracing the absurd (that is just accepting it and finding fun in the broad sense) or in utilizing it as an excuse to make your own meaning (that is rejecting pointlessness and being an agent of change) you end up with a purpose of sorts - what's more, even taking a religious tack, you still end up with that same meaning, even in the face of seemingly opposed conceits: most religious thoughts claim to have or create meaning within their own contexts, and within those counter-cultural groups, the opposition created then gives context to the religious thoughts (either in embracing the change, or in rejecting them). This, of course, does not inherently validate any particular counter-culture movement, philosophical take on it all, or religion, but within any of those contexts (even in rejecting any particular one) the existence of any or all makes contextual sense and permits the finding of reason and purpose within all of this. Fun times, is what I'm saying. Fun times.

  • i'm glad you guys covered smash mouth like this because these aspects are rarely touched upon in conversations about their music. they're unironically one of my favorite bands because they're fun, catchy, and their optimistic nihilism reflects my own personal philosophies. paul sarte and camus are actually two of my influences and while their ideas differ greatly at times i feel they can go hand in hand just as often. it sounds crazy but if you really listen to smash mouth's music you'll hear a lyrical representation of that happy nihilistic medium. i can see why people think it's dumb but they don't need to stick to one philosopher or idea to have their own. i feel like they're on to something but i'm not sure what. it's deep though, at least i think it is.

  • I think you should give a bit more credit for my boy Myles, the topic is Dope. Its one of the biggest hits of a whole generation for a reason, being that reason Deep or Dumb. I believe that in 100 years people will use their dumb songs to understand the society of the time. I think that the Deep side of this story is why them? There were hundreds of other artists that could have taken this Market Share, why them? Why did the Studios signed with them and not with a boy band made out of philosophers? I guess is that they spoke a language which the Back Street Philosophers were not able to, the language of the majority. They did that naturally out of their trips with drugs, sitting on a sofa at 3am in someones garage. I believe there is something beautiful about that. There is nothing in their songs that hold up to the 30s, they are talking with people in their 20ties maximum, who do not want to grow up, don't want this life to past by. Now, think with me, isn't that what is amazing in Spring Breakers? A Wisecrackers favorite. It might be Philosophically Dumb, but its an Anthropological treat.

In other words all of the existential topics but brought to scale so a mainstream, or young, audience could get it. Hence why they did songs for family films. Introducing the ideas in broad terms as a first step toward learning of these concepts.

  • You should have looked at the lyrics to Walking on the Sun which (in my view) mourns the 1960s precisely because it was the last modern for a newly defined morality. Society's fugue from that hopeful period resulted in a kind of nihilism that we're still unable to extricate ourselves from.
