    • Hey, Wiserack, what's up? The question was made a few months ago, but I expect something about Last of Us. I know you guys don't usually analyze games, but could you do one about Last of Us Part II? Maybe something about the nihilism involving the consequences of the first game, or even about human nature (wich is extremely savage in this world), or, who knows, a simply "deep or dumb" analysis? I'm absolutely sure you've seen that the game has divided opinions (basically among the gamer audience in general), but I think this game that has so much to offer and to discuss. So please, if you can, produce something about one of the best games of recent years, Last of Us Part II.

    • Go for another Shin Megami Tensei game! One thing that’s interesting about P3, P4, and P5 is they’re all one of the typical paths from the main SMT games. P3 was law, P4 was neutral, and P5 was chaos. The chaos route is always about changing humanity and not being chained by constraints and controls of a higher being or person (which is show in the Depths of Mementos, and with the new boss in Royal). This is also why you kill Yaldobaoth because the Chaos route always ends in you fighting God or a surrogate of God. However, I think just any SMT game would be good. Nocturne and Strange Journey tackle some heavy philosophical questions. I’m especially partial to Strange Journey because I feel it’s one of the best balances of choices and dark moral questions, with character and story development.

  • I disagree that the Tarot usage is kinda dumb. There are aspects of each character, their aspirations, their stories that play quite well. Doc was planning to end her practice, and because of our actions we help her have closure with her past and end the career of the doctor that played her wrong. Haru's awakened person makes more sense when you realize there is probably no heaven in that world, and she has a strong desire to outdo her father who tried to ascend into metaphorical space.

  • I may be wrong, but to me the several instances of rejection of religious fanaticism in famous thoughtful Japanese stories (P5, Attack on Titan, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, etc.) enforce the teaching of Buddhism on the centrality of contingent and dynamic morals. Conversely, it's always struck me as ideologically anti-American given that the US has a very strong tradition of fanatic religious Christian leadership (the Puritans and the Evangelicals).

  • When it comes to which interpretation of the tarot to use you really missed the two stories actually going on. 1 is indeed jokers journey. But, jokers journey in P5 is a forced journey, a forced journey to play his part within a larger game of the gods. So, you might want to rethink that dumb ranking a little.

  • No, Good and Evil are not "real" "real" exists outside of subjective interpretation. The fact that each person's sense of "Good" and "Evil" is inherently different, proves it not to be. Also, no. Just because we bring physical existence to our personal senses of "Good" and "Evil" does not make it real. The Hagia Sophia, just as an example, has major relevance to the faiths of Christianity and Islam, but a modernist and post-modernist interpretation would have no objective merit. "Good" and "Evil" are subjective, intangible concepts. A great example, one that plagues us to even the modern day, is racism. To those who are racist, those who aren't racist are evil against their own kind and those who aren't racist, find those who are to be abhorrent based on one's own intangible morality. There is no objective measurement for human morality, only the product of the person behind the morals. To further drive this point home, we'll tackle another major facet of modern human psychology: "Victim's Complex Culture". This culture is what is the umbrella thought process of which SJWs and both sides of the modern political aisle not only feel like they belong to, but actively try to prove their membership of. They feel like they are the ones being hurt and victimized. However, here's where I call it "Victim's Complex Culture" in the fact that as our subculture tends to develop with our egocentric morality. They feel that, because they've been victimized in some aspect, that they have the providence to victimize someone back or further make more victims to feed to the machine. People think that just because they feel pain, that it is right to make others feel pain as well. Yet it is considered to be one of the worst logical fallacies in human psychology. One that directly creates people who are maladjusted to society. Every single person who submits to said fallacious mindset is a bloody fucking coward. People use their victim's complex to justify hurting others, is either because they're egocentric, or too cowardly to accept their pain. What these people don't realize, is that their views and actions will only fester and ferment their own paranoid ideation. They know not the harm they cause both other people and themselves. There is no concept of "objective morality". Part of which is why I dislike Persona 5's story so much, so far. Its written with the mindset of a child, to the demographic of adults. It perpetuates the concept of adult guilt for not subscribing to their memetic delusions of their self-righteous, "objective morality". Even though the main character literally lives in the attic of the ultimate paragon of adulthood in Sojiro. Sojiro is, in my opinion, by sheer existence, proof that The Phantom Thieves are wrong in the entire Ethos of their purest existence. Not because its "objective morality" but because they don't acknowledge the exception to the adult-hating philosophy. Their worldview is so tainted by their ego, that Sojiro exists as proof that adults are not the problem. Heck, not even children are. I'd personally say that 95% of our societys' problems exist because of children. What the Phantom Thieves don't realize, is that these "shitty adults" are just "maladjusted children". Only further proving the perspective of the writer to be intrinsically shallow. It leaves no room for marginal error and furthers the delusions contrived by their black and white worldview. The very fact that there is no right and wrong, that there is no singular way to interpret the world, makes gray and grey morality so fascinating as a sense of morality. That any righteous individual can go wrong and every horrendous dog can have their day, is a fact antithetical to the message of The Phantom Thieves. The writer of P5 has very little awareness. So I further affirm, that Persona 5 is incredibly Dumb, posing as Deep. Something Wisecrack apparently missed in their own limited worldview. Wisecrack is peak pseudointellectualism.

  • Yeah, definitely agree with the esoteric symbolism. 3 and 4 did a really good job of reflecting these cards. I think that’s why 5 didn’t pay off as well there, because in 3 and 4 it was either the regular or inverse of the card. Catherine also symbolically follows the two lovers’ stories like in 3 and 4, which is why Katherine is a lot like Yukari, and Catherine is like Rise. I think that’s also why Rin in Full Body isn’t like Ann. So, yeah, I think by 5 they had to keep them, but they couldn’t retread 3 and 4’s social links. So, yeah, it’s a little too literal than actually being symbolic of them. I’m hoping 6 does better, but I’m concerned since Hashino stepped down for 6.

  • You absolutely won my subscription with your thoroughly researched and delivered thesis on this game. If there is any I would've changed, I would have had You collectively observed the greater themes of Shin Megami Tensei with the use of mythological monsters and the consistent theme of testing humanity. Mentioning that makes many of the choices regarding the ending have more reference. Though your video proved that this game can stand alone in its message.

  • The game does explicitly address the fact the phantom thieves are a moral crutch for society in the bad ending. If you take Yaldaboath's deal, then the phantom thieves exist forever with any evil-doers becoming their targets. This unwillingness to let go of power and accept change effectively makes the MC the final palace holder, clinging to the security he has in phantom thieves and submitting to Yaldaboath's will. Only by refusing his deal does the player accept the uncertainty of their future for the sake of the freedom of everyone.

  • I wouldn't say the game makes sloth seem the deadliest. it is introduced early as the people, and over time in the game we learn more about it. I think it's saying sloth is the easiest to fall into, as you can find all the previous palace owner's shadows in there. it's not the deadliest, but the easiest to be persuaded by, making a large mass fall under which is why it is the sin of the people

(context: Mementos Requests that pop-up while doing certain NPC Confidants, usually around Rank 8) The gist of it is that, by having Joker "magic" away some hard problem that occurs it takes away from the Confidants' growth. (ironically the one Confidant where they give us a legit reason is Hanged, which most people won't finish in their first playthrough due to it's high stat requirements)

Also the bit of being a “Pokémon clone” is kind of bs and disrespectful as SMT predates Pokémon be more than half a decade and the combat/monster collecting in SMT and Persona is FAR more in depth and engaging than what Pokémon has ever done, thought about doing, or will ever do. Besides those 2 nitpicks, this was an AMAZING video and analysis! I love these kind of deep dives into games like Persona.

I don't think it follows from the fact that the group thinks they did the right thing in killing God that they are embracing moral realism. To have opinions on morality or having your own moral code does not imply you think there are objectively right answers to moral questions. Other than that, I really enjoyed the vid. Thanks for diving into one of my favorite games!

  • I think it falls quite a way down to dumb. It just presents issues without actually tackling them. Instead it just solves them with magic. Not only that, it can be downright hypocritical at times. And even when approached from the Phantom Thief angle it is pretty half-assed and doesn't seem to understand the genre. And then it also tries to present a nuanced moral argument but is so dead set on moral simplicity that it all falls flat. Not only that, it seems to have completely forgotten the theme of it's namesake, only using it from series tradition. The games story just feels like it tries to do too many things at once and as such excels at none of them. The way the series has fallen from Persona 2 in terms of how it handles it themes is downright staggering and somewhat tragic. Though you should honestly check that game. It's depth is mind boggling.

  • This video is ultimately pretty interesting and informative, but your criticism of Persona 5's treatment of Tarot is really reaching and ultimately oversimplifies Persona's usage of the Tarot. At the end of the day it felt like you mischaracterized some things in order to have at least one aspect of P5 that you could call "Dumb." First of all: your discussion of the "shallow" connections between the Death Arcana/Lovers Arcana and Takemi/Ann is very off. Let's start with Death: 1. You are correct in saying that Death is not meant to only represent death itself but also the cycles of endings and beginnings, but that is not to say that Death representing literal death is not also appropriate. There is, after all, a reason that the card symbolizes the ideas of endings and beginnings with Death. And although Persona 5's treatment of it may FEEL on the nose in some ways, it would be inappropriate to claim, for example, that Persona 3's treatment of this Arcana is shallow even though it is explicitly tied to death itself. That game's primary theme is Death, after all. It is also worth noting that in Persona 3 there is a character who is facing death in the form of a terminal disease, but his arcana is The Sun for other reasons. 2. Although Takemi is a doctor, and she is the Death arcana, the narrative presented within her Confidant does actually represent a cycle of endings and beginnings. We find out through her Confidant conversations that she was previously a more successful and respected doctor at a major hospital, but her reputation was tarnished and she had to start over with a small practice. Through her interactions with Joker she eventually comes to become more confident and comfortable with having to start over, as previously she was unsure if she was going to be able to overcome the challenges of beginning again. This is a much more nuanced treatment of the Arcana than you represented, and it also directly contradicts the criticism that was given. Second of all, let's talk about how you also completely oversimplified why Ann is The Lovers: While The Lovers can represent the concept of love (once again, for good reasons) the card in the Rider-Waite deck depicts a naked Adam and Eve because The Lovers also represents innocence and purity. These qualities are perfectly reflected in Ann: she is a beautiful, innocent, optimistic person who is ultimately pure as she often shows a reluctance or an inability to deal with and understand the injustices and evils faced by herself an others. By the end of her interactions with Joker she has reaffirmed her positive outlook on life despite the various challenges to that worldview (the suffering of her best friend Shiho, the inappropriate lust for her by Kamoshida, and her bullying by a bitter and envious model.) Third of all, it's important to remember that Esoteric Tarot itself is "Kinda Dumb" because of what it ultimately is. It was kind of glossed over in the video but at the end of the day "fortune-telling" with the Tarot deck is actually just a form of assisted cold reading. The process of reading Tarot is ultimately crafting a narrative that "hits" in any way it can to the person whose cards are being read. In practice, reading the Tarot for someone involves finding ANY connection that is plausible between the symbology of the cards and the person across the table. The fact that Persona acknowledges the Fool's Journey at all or the connections between Tarot and some occult belief systems makes it much more intelligent than 95% of any popular usages of the Tarot.

  • What if they're just teenagers on acid running around breaking into homes & beating people up in the middle of the night?

  • Sloth is also involved in capitalism, since Acedia traditionally is understood as a hyper-busy-ness as well as a laziness. Like horseshoe theory with morality. Which, as the global human sin, capitalism is apt.

  • One of the things I didn't like about Persona 5 was that the Phantom Thieves had no morals but the villains are cartoonishly evil. It's hard to relate to the Phantom Thieves when you don't agree with their actions. But if you put it that way that the Phantom Thieves have no morals but all the villains have specific morals that's cool. Too bad however in the end Joker has to give up everything and admits to his crimes because of the Law. Not because it's right but because it's the Adult thing to do haha. Hopefully that is fixed in Royal.
