  • Always found it interesting just how fascinated people are when they visit places like the colosseum, imagining the horrific blood sports that happened there in disbelief that people could be so brutal. And yet today, it's not like we haven't just recreated the same kinds of entertainment with extremely graphic violence in films, TV and gaming. The only difference is that in the modern world we've been able to fulfil this weird obsession with carnage by using virtual proxies instead of the real thing. And if it's all lacking the intense communal energy that comes from being in a huge crowd watching it, we've recreated that too with popular sports played in massive arenas. The only real difference is that people back then lived a step away from death at all times, they saw violence, cruelty and illness around them all the time. Today in developed countries we're far more removed from that visceral experience, but there still seems to be a need to recreate the same kind of imagery in our cultures nonetheless.

  • The violence in American movies isn’t necessarily “over the top” if anything it’s actually designed to make us more comfortable with violence. To me, over the top violence is realistic violence or goes out of its way to make violence as graphic and awkward as possible, which usually makes an audience extremely uncomfortable. Don’t know what this says about verhoven movies, I think he’s still satirizing American culture but he’s not satirizing the fact that we love violence. I think it’s satirizing how we love theatrical violence while we’re uncomfortable with the real thing.

  • I guess the issue with his work is that lot's of people consume it without realizing it's satire. Build their worldview that some fascism would be great if there are bugs to fight. Basically by showing the smart viewer what they need to watch out for he's still furthering the causes he fights by giving the dumb ones exactly what they want in an acclaimed and socially acceptable way.

  • For anyone who wants to see Verhoeven's calling card, look no further than his first American-made film "Flesh + Blood". It's literally in the title, he finds sex and violence interesting, and asserts that the two are one and the same. Not only does he lay bare what would be the running themes throughout his later films, he also provides a spot-on critique of organized religion and its relation to the typically white-washed storytelling in medieval/fantasy films. It's currently streaming on Prime in the US and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Although possibly coincidental, and perhaps an unimportant detail, I see this link as deliberate. Perhaps that, like cockroaches, fascism is impossible to stomp out entirely and will migrate and repopulate elsewhere.

  • Total Recall was great, Starship Troopers was a failed attempt at satire.

Jack XiaoJack XiaoIl y a mois
  • Man, this is hard to watch. While I'll agree his work isnt dump, I wont say it's that smart and is often misinterpreted, even from the bloody director himself. Starship troopers is not about a fascist state. Just like how the book wasnt, but even their warped view on the book didnt make the federation seem fascist except out of surface details. The psi ops guys wearing snazzy ss uniforms and the propaganda segments are straight up nazi in nature, but nothing else about the movie is. From the father being a non citizen but extremely wealthy, and military participation not even required to live comfortably in their society. And the biggest point is that THE BUGGS ATTACKED 1ST. We see some mormons settle in bug territory, with no shown evidence of agression and the bugs slaughtered them all (and the federation didnt want the colonists to even settle there in the 1st place). And then the bugs nuked Buena Aires . That is massive amounts of agression shown to the human race and the humans attack back, knowing that the bugs were not gonna let them live peacefully. The bugs were an evil hivemind hostile to anything not their species. So fuck the bugs, the federation did nothing wrong (and if they did, I would love to hear what type of "humans evil" narrative you spin).

Jarom SwensonJarom SwensonIl y a mois
    • @peter&mj123 l any nation who runs out of manpower during a war will recruit the younger generation. Such is the consequence of a continued war with heavy casualties. Not a particularly nazi trait. But as far as the news goes, this is the most interesting aspect. Do we suspect the nation that allows anyone not a citizen immense freedoms to be lying to the audience, or do we suspect that the director (who wants to have a message about nazis) to make it seem like we are rooting for nazis. The original book was not about nazis or fascism, but a fight against communism (with the bugs being the communists). The original work was about the fear of letting your guard down before the red menace, while the director twisted that as a warning against what he perceived as growing fascism. He made a message about manipulation of the facts by a regime, by manipulating the actual message of a book. In this case the director is guilty of doing what he warns us of doing. So I reject the notion that this is a movie about fascists, as I see it what it is. A fun action flick barely based off a book (that the director barely read). And when I see a film showing the bugs to be horific monsters that are slave to a hive mind. brainbugs that have feelings, but not the surbodinants. Innocent humans killed in the millions, but mindless combat drones killed as well. Maybe it's the fact that I'm a human, but if the bug monsters kill my kind, then I dont care much for their side of the conflict. Maybe if they were more human like, then I can find a reason to care for them. As far as the movie tells, the inhuman bugs killed innocent humans, and the humans killed them back.

Jarom SwensonJarom SwensonIl y a mois
    • Jarom Swenson There is no real explanation or proof the bugs attacked first. The federation news only shows the bugs attacks out of context and it is just hearsay. They literally showed a censored cow being killed by a bug but they don’t censore the dead bodies of the Mormons (which they call extremists). They are playing with people’s emotions and brainwashing people that the Bugs totally bad and federation totally good and can’t ask no questions about it. Plus the Federation allows public lashings, televised executions, and permitted child soldiers.

  • There's something about Showgirls that always seemed obvious to me. The thick layer of phoniness that covers all of Nomi's story. her dialogue, the situations she finds herself in, everything seems off and fake, like out of a bad novel. Her arrival in Vegas is like Dorothy arriving in Oz, a strange place full of fantastic and unnatural things. She even pronounces Versace wrong, like it's a cheap knockoff of a luxury brand. Elizabeth Berkley's acting seemed very forced and over the top, from the dance scenes to the sex scene in the pool, and I think it was done on purpose. The only real parts of the movie are the scenes with Gina Gershon's character, the only one who figured out the reality of the place she lived in, and towards the end, when Nomi spits on Zack's face and gets out of Las Vegas. She took her over acting down a notch, like she was leaving the phony valley. My two cents on this very, very misunderstood film.

  • Satire is Verhoeven's crutch for being educated but totally vapid and unwise. He can indulge his vulgar sensibilities as long as he excuses it as meta elitist caricaturing. Mostly entertaining though not exactly engrosssing. We are however now living in a real life amalgum of Robocop and Demolition Man - except without any of the cool stuff. Darren Aronofsky should remake Showgirls and win best picture with it, lol.

  • Just as South Park, the work is entertaining on many different levels. It's wack humor, but deeper down it's political commentary. I remember being young and watching "Troopers" and finding it entertaining, but I never really analyzed what I was watching on any deeper level. Now that I'm older and rewatched it I suddenly realized the movies actual message and therefore it took on a whole other meaning.
