In our severely effed up world, Mob Psycho provides some excellently wholesome anime entertainment. At the same time, the show grapples with some pretty deep philosophical issues about finding meaning in the world. Let's dive in in this Wisecrack Edition on Mob Psycho 100: Why Superheroes Don't Matter.

I thought watches where an old fashion status symbol by now, a waste of money if you have a phone which tells the time...if you ask me ...Will probably go out of style and into the next steam punk pretty soon. The first thing I do when getting a notification from an app is to disable its notifications. Creating watches is wasting natural resources and buying them stimulates a company that needs to pollute to stay afloat. To spare the environment -> Donate directly to Wisecrack.

  • Even without realising it, I think Mob influenced me the most as a person. Those around me tend to get surprised by the fact that I don't necessarily take pride in "being better". By "being better" I mean that people notice I tend to look deeper into things and such, but I know that being able to not overthink would be a nice trait to have that would benefit me, and is also a trait most of my family members posses. I think that before anyone is smart, tall, good, bad, man or woman or anything else, we're all born human. Besides, arrogance is tiring for both the one practicing it and the one having to listen to it, and I'm honestly too lazy for that.

  • I'm surprised Solipsism wasn't explored despite the examples given. And neither side is "Right" they're both essential for cause n' effect, regarding human progress. They work off each other. Work against each other. and sometimes they work together. The problem arises when one side loses sight of their role, assuming that only their role matters and begins to turn Totalitarian or parasitical, imposing their paradigm onto everyone else who they share existence with.

  • What is the best way to find meaning in this world? a) from society to our place in it. b) from our selfs as we emerge into society. c) be like the jehovah's witnesses and see that society is beyond saving, letting it die to its' own demise, waiting for global warming to kill us all so the earth can move on from us humans. or d) this question is dumb and no anwser can suit. JFK said, "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." Uncle Ben said. "with great powers comes great responsiblities." Stan Lee remarks to a unexpecting Peter, "Well maybe one guy can make a diffrenece." I believe to understand one's existance can be a good and bad thing. Good because one sees they have agency out-side of a group, therefor are apart from that group. Specal as Mob is. However this leads to a moment where one's awarness glorfies the self as the most important aspect of life. This should act as a speed bump to actualization, but most stop there and do not probe for any deeper meaning. What should be considered is what comes after meaning is reconized and what signals in society drive us to ack with our power? Maybe family or career, or some other fasate of life that one can transend into. Society itself is an artificial network to deliever message and ideas to people who are aware of theirself. It will only ever have the power one give to it. A person is not society, but a person does have power. How much or little that power may be is irrelevant, the point is one will never be without vices. People should not find meaning in society, because one will never relate to it. But society will always seek to find its' idenity in those who act within it.

  • I think some people might be misunderstanding the message here. By how I see it, the point Mob is trying to sell is not that you can't have big goals, or that you must conform to every societal standard or demean yourself to the point that you think all that there is for you in life is a mediocre life built entirely on the basis of whatever system is in place, even those that are corrupt. You can have dreams, you can think of yourself as important, you can try to bring change into the world. Reigen is always claiming to be the best, Teru saw himself as the protagonist, the members of claw changed themselves to stand out as much as possible. They got their reality checks eventually, but after that, it isn't like they dropped everything about themselves. No, Reigen's bussiness goes the same as ever, Teru still seems to lack a lot of empathy, and his pride in being special is merely changed out for pride in being average, the members of claw haven't changed in their standoffish looks and general personality. What turned their lives around is that they realized that they are not alone, that they can't do everything by themselves, and that there's value to be found in helping others. That's just about the basis of it all - you are not alone. As the intro says, "if everyone is not special, maybe you can be who you want to be." The idea of equality doesn't have to be that everyone is destined to not make an impact - no, it's that everyone can and does make an impact, that everyone has infinite potential. Every one is important, but no-one is above or below others. This idea also takes off the pressure in situations where, if you feel like some path in life is not right for you, you don't need to force yourself to follow it regardless, because there's sure to be someone who'll fill that role for you. Your life is your own

  • I love this series because it articulates the fundamental of messages of Shonen Anime and Manga - work hard, pursue your dreams, and make friends - but does it in a way that opposes Shonen's impulse towards emphasizing powerful people's "powers" over their qualities as people. Most of the most famous Shonen stories like Naruto, My Hero Academia, One Piece, et. al. are designed to emphasize the importance of the character's power as a vehicle for both growth and conflict because their narrative focus is on action rather than a slice of life narrative. In those stories, it is essential that you refine your psychic blasts because then people like you more. Otherwise, you can't beat the enemy of the weak into the dirt and prove your value to the world. And so the audience identifies the power as the important thing; not the fact that the characters are also emotionally intelligent, caring, and compassionate. But Mob takes that essential formula and parses it into two subplots: the Psychic world and the real world. And by doing so, allows us to see the essential message of all shonen, but in a way that makes it more real and actionable. You can make the decision to get fit, join clubs, and care about others while also pursuing your dreams. And the pursuit of your passion can just be another part of your life that isn't a big deal. It also allows for ONE to make a statement about the potential toxicity of over-identifying with your favorite super-powered protagonists at the expense of living your life meaningfully in the spirit of them. It's like Neon Genesis Evangelion's swipes at Otaku culture, except kind. All that is to say, after watching Mob Psycho 100, I got a reality-check, and decided to stop waiting until I was super-awesome and beyond reproach to pursue my dreams and just go after them, and take the boring, mundane steps to make myself a better person. Working out, going to meet people in real life; learning to diet patiently; budgeting. My life has gotten a lot better. I've lost some weight, and i've gotten a bit more confident. I'm financially healthier. I'm still a long way off, but I'm getting there. It's nice.

      Eric KoenigEric KoenigIl y a 4 mois
    • Yep. It takes a lot of things I learnt in my journey as a psychologist (and most importantly, as a person who used to suffer too much). There's so many aspects of this, but one simple and practical is perfectionism. I used to be incapable of putting anything out there wich wasn't to the highest of my standards, this stumped me so much. Over time I realized that there's no problem with anything not being "perfect", there's always time for improving it later, and its more enjoyable, less stressful, and more practical to just be putting yourself out there at the stages you're at, and having fun along the way.

Scociety naturally secludeds people like that either because they excpect a lot from them or nothing at all. Their is also the aspect that the scociety that one secludeds themselves from might be evil after all if you seclud yourself from scociety and you contribute something good and they regect it you could evil and if you contribute something bad and they except it then scociety is evil. If stay isolated you never have to know how or why your being rejected. If you think about it ether it dosen't matter becuse you do nice things all your life and still no one will love you becuase everyone agreed a long time ago that everyone is an asshole. After all ifyou live in a scociety were everyone is a dick no one is. It just normal.

  • I'm not sure that is true, I've never felt like it is in my life. Sure society is needed to help everyone who's a part of it, but it's what people are capable of and what is essentially unique about them that persuades society of their value, it's what makes them seen as worth keeping around. But more personally, I'm not sure if 'society' is real as literally as it's thought to exist. Can community Really exist if just one person doesn't feel like a part of it?

  • Does anyone else think One's work is also a metaphor for our current level of technological power as a species? I mean, with nuclear weapons and all the gains in genetics, we as a species have as much power as nature itself to shape the planet and the solar system ( terraforming Mars). So can One's message be that we as a species are as powerful as Saitama or Mob and that we need to learn how to live together in peace & harmony with ourselves as well as with the other species on the planet? Could his message be that we can live in peace and harmony by realising that our recently acquired powers don't make us all that special after all? Just a thought!

  • I think it's fascinating how anime tropes reflect the lies and troubles of a very different society from my own. The people with the superior philosophy usually win fights, most stories are about the struggle to find meaning, self-negation selflessness and self-sacrifice are glorified and conformity is often balanced with exceptionalism. These are all reflecting a society where people struggle with their own identities, trying to find meaning and meaningful connection and having great difficulty to do so and where the ideal state of being is to try and be empty of self. Don't get me wrong, neoliberalism is sick to the core and by no means better then this suffocating version of capitalism but these stories are reflective of a society that feels choked and alienated. As for the question of finding meaning, either within society or without, I think it grossly misses the point. In this framework, meaning is put as how you leave a mark, what you do that will be seen, regarded or remembered by others. This is hollow, seeking meaning for the ego. The ego cannot achieve meaning, it remains hungry for more. Meaning is found within, not within society but within yourself. A life where you raise kids, love a partner, dedicate yourself to science can be meaningful not because of what you achieve, but for the meaning of what you experience in what it means to you. For some people that is religion, for some it is hedonism, for some it is love or family, for some it is the work they do. The activity is irrelevant, the meaning you attach to it is what matters.

  • As much as I can understand the sentiment, I cannot believe that one can be special within a society. To be remembered, you must inherently transcend a society, or you are just another person. To continue acting in exactly the same way is little more than an attempt to relate to those you cannot for self comfort, not a bad thing but a selfish one. If you wish to be better than you have to think and act beyond simple humanity, not remain in a static normalcy. Of course that doesn't need to mean doing bad or selfish things, only that we surrender our claim to being human when we become special, for we have become more than our limited lifespan.

  • Mob Psycho changed my life. As a genius (142iq) I'd always felt disconnected from society and the world, feeling above and beyond it. Needless to say I was miserable as a result. (though I would have blamed society and the world for it at the time) Mob Psycho taught me to reframe my ability from a status to a service; it made me realize why I thought that nothing mattered: because truly nothing does until it's shared with others. It made me realize that like me, everyone has their own unique ability with something special to offer. In my view Mob Psycho is the anti-R&M. It makes a compelling case against nihilism by reminding us that WE DO matter- Not I, not you, not alone- but us together, and that It's incumbent on the individual in a world infected by disillusion and delusion to find meaning by strengthening those connections.

    Acsion42Acsion42Il y a 10 mois
    • @Anoop Singh Rick and Morty is nihilistic. It might be tricky to distinguish because it does take a hard stance against 'Existential' Nihilism (the popular definition of nihilism) by setting up rick as the anti-hero. I can see why you might then think R&M isn't nihilistic at all, but the fact is that it just props up another form of nihilism- 'Optimistic' nihilism- by identifying Jerry as Rick's opposite. Dan Harmon himself said "The knowledge that nothing matters, while accurate, gets you nowhere." That's nihilism. Optimistic or not. Mob Psycho, on the other hand, throws nihilism out the window altogether by declaring that things do, in fact, matter.

      Acsion42Acsion42Il y a 10 mois
    • Anti R&M ain't that accurate because Rick and Morty ultimately isn't nihilistic. Rick is but he's supposed to be wrong. He thinks nothing matter and he's a depressed alcoholic with barely any meaningful relationships who's tried killing himself. Your not meant to see his worldview as right. As the show as gone on you can see Morty becoming more like Rick as well with all they've gone through together like at the post credit scene of this seasons premiere. So really Beth and Jerry are the characters to identify with the most odd as it sounds.

  • Society can never successfully define for produce any type of valuable meaning because it's sole purpose is survival. That does not mean society is bad, it is just ill equipped to handle this type of existential work. This is why children hide their aspirations from their parents. The child wishes to place massive bets against their advantages in hopes of procuring something special. Mothers and fathers only wish to implement the most stringent protections to see to the health, safety, and longevity of their progeny. It is for this cause that the child plots secretly, contemplates his ambition in silence, and only reveals his decision with one foot already in the gamble. Meaning must and will always come from the interloper. The one who can afford to die, be demoted, loose a woman's hand in marriage, or be jailed can cultivate the leading ideas and believes.

Or rather, he's an incredibly "strong" man in spite of not having anything like extreme luck, kung-fu training, telepathy, healing 'magic', or training in marksmanship. But he DOES have a powerful tongue that is great for command in the battlefield, inspirational speeches, and probably 10/10 kisser.... and that is all a girl could ask for. Believe me when I say Tact Mayers is the kind of man Mob really wants to be.

  • We are *not* the only self-aware animals...elephants, dolphins, corvirds, apes: all self-aware. That's why they all literally _mourn_ their dead.

  • The discussion in here is very interesting and relevant. But the tile of the vídeo is SOOOOOO misleading that I kinda distracted me from the subject.
