  • as a former member of the Mormon cult, they heavily discourage questions and doubt, saying that it doesn't need to make sense to work. also there was a lot of implicit shaming, and incessant repetition of following the chain of command. also there's this perverted sense of obligation, that your not living up to your potential and god's expectations if you don't give them 10% of your income. not to mention peer pressure of all your friends doing it( and another thing, your encouraged to only have Mormon friends) and your entire family as well.

  • I heard the word "saving" when referring to the tigers. I want to clarify, they are NOT saving tigers. They are breeding tigers to give to often negligent owners. Both them and the owners house them in inappropriate conditions and then end up having to put them down when they're grown or find a sanctuary to give them to. They don't save tigers! They use them as props for their sick power game and then shoot them when they start getting too old to be used for breeding or displays.

  • You showed pictures of Osho a few times but didn’t say anything about him or his followers... I know he’s something of a controversial figure, but it’s super ironic his followers land was given to Young Life as a born-again christian retreat center. Those insidious fuckers... I remember the exact moment I realized YL was a cult. We were discussing the “miracle of fish and loaves.” I made the argument that it wasn’t necessarily a literal miracle. It seems pretty obvious to me that it’s ultimately a lesson about creating abundance through the pooling and redistribution of resources... Their response was as succinct as it was infuriating and unsatisfying, “Nope. It was a miracle.” Then they implied that if I couldn’t unquestionably accept that answer I simply lacked faith.

The result has always been me getting me out of the cult voluntarily for the small price of me shitting on whatever the cult stands for.

  • The Tshirt color coding in Baskin's case doesn't seem like a cult tactic. In any business there is usually a hierarchy. They used a visual tactic of colors to define their place in this hierarchy. Since the volunteers are probably transient, it probably helps the younger volunteers find someone who can answer more complicated questions. Just like any business, the intern has a nametag and will seek out the manager to handle harder issues. Also, shes exploiting tigers as a business, under the guise of charity. Its a dick move, but not really about being a cult.

  • I grew up with a dad who was in a sort of “Martial arts cult” and it had some pretty strange teachings he never really talks to me about, I think I notice certain cult like characteristics because he is rather charismatic and has studied parts of psychology that let him understand grief and addiction, so if he so chose he could start a cult, he says he wouldn’t do that because he’s seen how destructive they can be for people.

  • For a sponsor, you should have stuck with the foot mouse idea. It really is unironically an idea with potential, unlike stupid-ass Raid Shadow Legends. Besides which, the company that made Raid Shadow Legends has been buying these sponsorships on FRworld for a long damn time. By now, isn't it about time for them to announce that they're shutting down the servers for Raid and they want you to download their new game called "Invasion: Spooky Chronicles", which isn't actually a different game from Raid Shadow Legends in any meaningful sense, it just means that you lose all the gacha characters and all the upgrades that you've spent real-life money on? That's what the people who made Card King Dragon Wars did, and that was the only free-to-play mobile game that was ever any good, even though whoever named it should have been kicked in the neck for being so unoriginal.

    • Heteronormativity influences speech in a way that breaks down predictable syntax. Just to be clear I'm not saying the word 'homophobic' here. Similarly I've heard phrases like "black person of colour" and "female identifying transwoman". A person whom has a prejudice against so called "labels" may claim falsely that it's 'because everyone is too afraid that they will offend' but in reality it appears more likely that this over-clarification is used for ourselves and not others. People are grappling with terminology that has previously evaded their knowledge or use. Kind of like when you learn a new word and find yourself overusing it or inserting it in places that are unfamiliar/incorrect. It's part of the pulchritudinous of language. Ultimately the more this terminology finds a familiar place in the language the less we will see it come out as a word jumble. Less expectations of husband being a singular associated with a wife and less failure to easily describe a husband of other circumstances. I love how language evolves.

      Rose JulietteRose JulietteIl y a 4 mois
    • Good point. I wouldn't want a female husband, but a female wife is okay, but that is only because I am a heterosexual. Rodney Dangerfield claimed his wife was a hobosexual. She was a bum lay. He also said he had no problem with bisexuals, in fact, he kept one in his garage. It was a Schwinn.

  • Love your insightful perspectives on our shared pop culture, looking forward to more The Squanch! On OSHO (guy with the long white beard and pimped out turban) lumping him in as just a cult leader seems unjust and superficial. I don´t think one can come across a less fanatic man, simply asking people to bring more awareness into life. I get that you were making a point and might not have looked more deeply into each example. Tons of media refer to him in similar fashion, but without the context of his actual talks only the sensational controversies stands out. The docuseries "Wild Wild Country" does a fine job covering this part in no flattering way. If you wanna know more about his early life look up the movie "Rebellious Flower". His life contains thousands of hours’ worth of discourses on all mystic traditions of the world and they are available to everyone. I might disagree with his approach at times, but I can´t judge the man. Can anyone ever have a "perfect" conduct? Being enlightened does not equate infallibility. You can look into it for yourself, whether you find a traumatic narcissist or a sincere human being trying to convey the mystery that have happened to him.

  • I think so long as it's voluntary and not exploitive (!!), then the idea of a cult like structure to give some friends meaning is not that bad after all. Thinking about some version of the garden Epicurus described. Key is of course that you don't have any kind of hierarchical structure and it has to be so small, that everybody is everyday in direct contact to everybody else. Would love to hear some thoughts about that idea!

Sucks that people can fall into this type of lifestyle so easily especially when they're already in a vulnerable state. Exploiting people like this should definitely be a crime, you don't always have to use chains to keep people in bondage.

  • Another to mention cults do is a thing called, "Love Bombing." Usually in the early stages of grooming a new recruit to a cult, members of the cult and cult leader act overly nice. This is too make the new recruit open up about any emotional weakness about themselves; like childhood trauma, past relationship, depression, lack of friends, lack of purpose, ect. With that information the cults lies who they will heal that new recruits emotional hurt and that ONLY they can make them feel safe, loved, valued, powerful, and happy.
