If you internet, you may have heard the rumor that coronavirus is caused by 5G technology, and you may have laughed at the people dumb enough to believe it. But here's the thing: we're all more susceptible to pseudoscience than we like to think. And there's a perfectly good reason why. • @long w lenguyen okay, i can understand that it would be frustrating to have a piece of art that i deeply appreciate, overshadowed by an (in my eyes) inferior piece of art sharing the same name. but something about the number of times you seemed to refer to the fandom being somehow betrayed by the movie makes me think you might benefit from watching this:

      Ian BIan BIl y a 4 mois
    • @Ian B Sorry it is just frustrated people mention the movie over a once great philosophical masterpiece animated series try to be, the Aeon Flux movie bombardment the fandom and the Aeon Flux animated series was forgotten from mainstream cultute and nobody remember it except a pocket few fans remain, movie like Avatar the last Airbender got criticize for whitewashing or all of Alan Moore adaptations only to be hated by the comic creator but that didn't make the fandom forget it instead it united the fandoms to love the source materials originality but Aeon flux movie bomb so hard all of it fandom are afraid to mention the cartoon because who wanted to associated with a piece of garbage of a movie, the movie even ruins other peoles lives like the directors and the main actress take them a long time to fix their career the problem was the studio interfering in the writing. go "Why Aeon Flux a masterpiece" on youtube then you will see why sometime the source material are better than the adaptations. and yes sexuality and feminity is the main focus of what make Aeon a great character, Aeon Flux in the Cartoon is present us she is a strong will and freedom women that dresses whatever she want and do whatever she wanted she's a self employ women with no string or nobody to command all of her violent action and sexual are on her own will that what make her an anarchist while in the movie Aeon is obeying order and fight for humanity which a betrayal to the freedom women we saw in the series and the vengeful tales is rather stupid since Aeon in the cartoon is a obsessed sociopath anti hero with large personality like her lover nemesis anti villain Trevor Goodchild the both so hated each other but so lustful toward one another and the only victims of the cartoon is the two border wall cities citizens of Monica and Bregna whom have to suffers between Aeon chaotic "liberation" dominatrix Freewill and Trevor "Progress" ant marching Orwellian society

      long w lenguyenlong w lenguyenIl y a 4 mois
    • @long w lenguyen i was with you until you started complaining about the lack of sexual ambiguity in the insecure teenager lol the movie is shitty, but i enjoy it. don't try to argue me out enjoying something; that's such a waste of time. i am curious about the cartoon now, but also...lil bit yikes there bud edit: like, i'm not trying to argue you out of being a sexual human being, but the movie aeon is just your typical dope action hero and there's no need for her sexuality or femininity to be the focus. and it's very silly to decry the protagonist of an action movie for not being feminine enough

      Ian BIan BIl y a 4 mois
    • @Ian B No it is not Aeon Flux was about the battle between anarchism of free will and technocratic authoritarianism. In the cartoon Aeon Flux world is a industrial nightmarish bio tech dystopia with only two Berlin wall parody style city in former Eastern Europe are the last two remain civilization of the human race but engaing in a very meanigless ideological war, Aeon Flux is the dominatrix anarchist main character but she did alot of questionable issues like terrorism bombing and killing soldiers with human lives, Trevor is a technocratic dictator but his messianic complex obsession of saving mankind is admirable at first but he is extremely morally ambiguous first he may try to save mankind then he just throw it all away when he is bored that what make the both so interesting they are so obsession and sadistic to the point we don't even know who is the main character is literally like spy vs spy or Tom and Jerry for adults in a very weird surreal sexual dominatrix way Aeon Flux cartoon is like Philip K Dick and Salvador Dali on drugs. In the movie is more of a stereotypical action movies Aeon the good guy Trevor the confuse bad guy and also they have a mysterious past that just so boring there is no moral ambuiguity and Aeon in the movie is misleading is just stereotypical Hollywood action movies the good vs evil cliches that Peter Chung trying to against.

  • People do not like being ignorant, therefore if given a subject matter that they either do not have the intellectual capacity to understand, are too lazy to put the effort into understanding, or just have a profit motive they are trying to hide, they will latch onto a conspiracy theory hook line and sinker. So there are plenty of people who do not realize visible light is a form of radiation, and therefore do not understand why radio waves are so less harmful than anything with a higher wavelength plus they do not even know why antibiotics cannot be used on a virus much less what a virus actually is, so it is a perfect delusion for them to adopt and push as it makes them feel smart and it makes them feel like they are justified in whatever troglodyte actions they commit.

THIS IS PROVEN RESEARCH!!! it got legalized right when the pandemic started bc nobody would pay attention to it and then they can do this little conspiracy theory bullshit. 5g towers only exist in a few countries..... the countries with the most cancer in the planet. covid is in every country.

There is a term which I think often describes some "smart people" which is "Educated beyond one's intelligence." Like a trained parrot these people can easily learn to spout existing dogma which makes appear to the layman as being intelligent and well versed in their topic. These are often where the so called "experts" come from. Others are just conman looking to jump on the bandwagon as a way to get a pay day.

  • If it wasn't for the fact that so many people believe this crap, it would be hilarious. And yes, it's all down to the failure of American education. They teach 2+2=4, but not how or why. Somewhere along the way, we stopped teaching the basics of the water cycle, and now people believe we can run out of water. And we no longer teach history, either. Lincoln has almost no mention in modern textbooks. No one is actually taught anything these days. Instead, they learn to parrot what teacher/parent/college prof says and never question any of it.

You can test this out and discover this by researching and performing the results these fake scientists claim that they do.If you are not smart enough to do this yourself then you’re probably gonna believe anything you’re told anyway. It is not interaction with a measurement apparatus that causes the waveform to collapse. If that were the case it wouldn't even be the slightest bit strange or noteworthy. • Uh... There actually is studies and evidence on the effect of energy modalities like Reiki and Therapeutic Touch. None support the idea that these therapies can cure cancer (although none disprove it, there just isn't that much evidence either way, I lean towards they probabaly don't) BUT there is good and growing evidence that needs more funding and research and larger scale expeirments that show these modalities DO help reduce pain, discomfort, and anxiety, especially as a complementary medicine, like with people undergoing chemotherapy. There also seems to be evidence that this works better than the placebo, but obviously the set up is harder to do than standard pharmaceutical medication, so again, more research is needed. This is why I hate Goop and people trying to to debunk it. The claims are outrageous and poorly cited, but there actually is a reality of less outrageous but interesting research that gets completely ignored. So the argument becomes 'can energy healing cure cancer or is it total bunk?' and the answer is actually neither. It seems to work well as a complementary medicine to manage things like pain and anxiety although more research is needed. But that's not very eye catching is it?

    Red WalkerRed WalkerIl y a 2 mois
    • Also, ' absence of evidence is not evidence of absence '. It's important to look into whether a "lack of evidence" for something comes from multiple studies showing no effect for something or from no research being done at all.

The authors reviewed information from various studies that had used reiki on people with cancer and people without cancer. Some of the people had recently had surgery so they wanted to see if reiki could help with pain after surgery. Others were about to have a breast biopsy and were feeling anxious. They found that after reiki, women having a breast biopsy had a reduction in their anxiety and patients who had recently had surgery reported a decrease in their pain. Although there were only a small number of studies (7 studies in total), the authors concluded that reiki may be helpful for pain and anxiety. They recommended that more studies should be done in the future with larger numbers of people.

  • “Pseudoscience often preys on the fact that its victims are educated. For instance, antivaxxers tend to be more educated than their well-vaccinated peers.” I think these assessments are problematic at best. And that's ignoring the fact that the smart move, getting vaccinated, can be easily done by the stupidest person on Earth who has no idea what a vaccination is or why they're getting one beyond the fact that someone told them to go stand in a line. But that's a whole nother issue, and doesn't get at the matter of "educated" people buying into conspiracy theories. *I* would say that to qualify as “educated”, a person must possess certain attributes that extend beyond the simple capacity for the memorization and recitation of facts. Amongst the most rudimentary, and important, are: 1) An understanding of what the consensus of 99% of the experts in the field is. 2) An intimate familiarity with not merely the existence - but the broadest and most extensive implications - of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. If either of these things comes across as equivocation, they shouldn’t, and if they do, then we just have to broaden the context of our discussion and do a better job of defining our terms. As far as I’m concerned, anyone ignorant of these two things I mention cannot be considered “educated” in any specific scientific discipline. Subsequently, I would argue that it isn’t possible for an educated layman to fall victim to pseudoscience in the manner you suggest they are vulnerable. This isn’t to say such a person cannot fall prey to misinformation or misunderstanding; even experts make mistakes. We are all human. It *is* to say, however, that such a person cannot be a dedicated proponent of pseudoscientific conspiracy theories. Pursuant to item #1 above, an educated layman knows that the experts know better, and, just as importantly, pursuant to item #2, they know that they *don’t* know better than the experts.

  • What's with the needless disparagement of medical doctors. I'm an MD and I have news for you; our training absolutely incorporates critical thinking and research methods. Rote memorization is the first, easiest, and most trivial part of medical training. Instead of insulting medical doctors, maybe Wisecrack should acknowledge that a) they are (apparently) completely ignorant of how medical education works. and b) plenty of scientists (even those with mighty PhDs) pedal in pseudoscience as well. The unifying factor of these scammers is personal greed and willful ignorance of the area they claim expertise in. The particular letters that follow our name have nothing to do with it.

  • Doctors don't practice, or aren't trained in critical thinking? Seriously? Doctors, like researchers, are humans, and therefore bound to have some small percentage of duds. There are similar gullible small communities among researchers touting pseudoscience as well. If you think all we do is memorization without critical thinking, next time you're sick I invite you to simply treat yourself via WebMD instead of coming to see people like me at the emergency department. Oh and by the way to keep our jobs most of us are required to also publish research regularly.
