  • Adult Swim gets a lot of "edge lord" street cred, but Comedy Central & MTV were doing satirical, irreverent takes since the early 2000's as well. Wonder Showzen, Chappelle Show. Even FUSE had whitest kids you know. They're funny dudes, with great style but I don't think that makes them any more ground breaking than other counterculture comedians. Tom Green, George Carlin. Feel free to correct me, if I'm missing the point.

When some dude named Nick Fuentes got on his stream Tim was so obviously anxious in his speech pattern that it's kinda amazing he still managed to act like such a righteous asshole.

  • It feels like the recent Wisecrack videos "critiquing" contemporary advancements of commercialism and advertising are them grappling with their own existential crisis of being a cannel whose roots are in deconstructing society but are in turn becoming part of the superstructure. I'm sitting here waiting for the "Wisecrack: Deep or Dumb?" video.

  • As a rule of thump, all alternative art brought to relevance has an expiration date before becoming an economic asset. The bar is put higher and the post moved forward every time a new outsider is incorporated into the mainstream culture. That doesn't mean their art loses value or credibility, it's the effect of exposure. Even if they're the ones also moving the post in awkwardness, they're already in the spotlight.

  • Am I the only person who absolutely cannot stand Tim and Eric? To me, awkward and uncomfortable is not funny, nor is pushing patience, which is all Awesome Show ever seemed to do. I really liked Tom goes to the Mayor, but I hated Awesome Show, and still to this day get irrationally upset when I see segments from that show. I also can't stand Rainn Wilson, so maybe their brand of "comedy" just isn't for me. I have seen it described as anti-comedy before, and I think that is a very apt description. It's just content that dares you to turn it off. Sorry, but I will always take that dare when faced with that type of material.

    • No, I don't like them that much either. For every funny thing they've done there's about 1,000 OTHER unfunny things they've done. It so rare they actually hit my funny bone. Also, I've grown to loathe AS as a platform. It was rather cool in the beginning when they rotated the shows they had on, but when the schedule became static as hell I started to lose interest. And yeah, I understand they probably could keep the rights to ALL those shows, but I wish they could have.

  • The way most ads have worked during the postmodern era is to juxtapose a product with another appealing sign (wealth, good health, sex). Thereby, when you think of one you recall, connotatively through the sign system, the other. Few ads today actually talk about the merits of the product (maybe.. toothpaste?). Why T&E's ads feel less like they're 'selling out', I think is due to the signifier (the ad) for their signified product, being aggressively disturbing and unconventional. But it's imitable, and unfortunately it too has become conventional over the last decade.

  • It's pretty easy to agree with this overall. I've been a fan of Adult Swim ever since space ghost. But then I just requalify when I see something that has no agenda except funny. Instead of uncomfortable laughter, it's just spontaneous. Totally vanilla but funny as hell. Hardly anything like that. There's a Canadian series called "Corner Gas" on Amazon Prime. Beats the shit out of Tim and Eric. Sorry guys. Funny is funny. Annoying is only funny sometimes.

  • The problem with absurdity is that it is at the end of the day indiscernible from randomness. It often becomes the things it mocks, like GG Allen who became a monster to "criticize" the monstrous, or just indeciferable, like much of the work of David Lynch. Now that isn't to say that it has no merit or worth-- it can often serve to make us question and analyze perhaps even beyond what the artists have intended-- but this begs the question of whether that analysis comes from the absurdity itself or our curious nature as humans who need to understand even that which was never meant to be understood.
