  • Prediction: There will never be an announcement by governments to the effect of: “Okay, the worst is over, you can ditch the masks and go back to work.” Instead, ineffectual health theatre will join the ineffectual security theatre that ensued after 9/11, and governments will retain the “emergency” power to say at a whim, “there’s a surge; back in the box!” to those they deem “nonessential”.

  • You -almost- managed to say it, Wisecrack, you were so close. Allow me to say it for you: we have to stop eating beef, and eventually, all animal meat. I know, I know it sucks, but four important things: giving up meat to a human-wise plant-based diet is necessary for the global environment, it’s more ethical, it’s healthier (you’ll never get pandemics from plants), and there are more kinds of delicious vegan food now than ever. I’m telling you, I was seriously once one of those “I could never go vegan, meat is my life” types, but I’ve been vegan for two years and it’s fantastic. Humanity must, in time, become fully vegan everywhere.

  • I would say I believe the contagionists more than the nutritionists. Viruses and diseases are very tenacious, and their main goal is to infect hosts (preferably with no symptoms, because bad symptoms kill the host which effectively kills the virus). Any person, regardless of health or ability, can be infected and subsequently suffer adverse effects. Preventing a disease from spreading, especially if there is no clear treatment against it, is going to be a far better strategy for minimizing cases then simply improving people’s nutrition. It’s far easier to protect people from bullets if you keep them out of the line of fire than to put them in front of it and simply provide a Kevlar vest.

  • I see a pattern in history. When people are living in crowded cities and with vast wealth gaps, disease spreads like fire in a dry forest. In the mid 20th century, there was a large middle class. In nations where they still have a middle class, COVID-19 didn't pose as much as a threat. The US is in a similar position that it was in 1918. Next comes an economic depression... It's like we're cursing ourselves when there is poverty.

  • You can stay home while I live life. And to those who would say, "how are you going to enjoy life when you die?" or some other cliche, take a look at the reality. You're stuck in your house wasting away while I'm out and about. I go hiking and see masses of people with no mask and not stuck in home. You're going to die. And chances aren't it's not going to be COVID, it's going to be your heart giving out. Enjoy life.

  • Trying to compare drugs to vaccines as a way to say medicinal intervention is inferior to public health measures is kinda not fair. Of course diseases can develop immunizations to certain kinds of drugs, but a vaccine is not the same thing. Vaccines develop antibodies and the only way they fail at being effective is if the virus mutates into a different strain that needs new antibodies. However, the virus can't mutate if it can't spread...cause it won't spread if people's immune system is destroying it before it has to chance to do so.

  • ::musing:: The rise of the wellness industry is a fairly recent phenomenon (when was GOOP founded?). For now, it’s primarily hit-or-miss novelty treatments for rich celebrities, but as the concept of “wellness” expands to involve more industries and (hopefully) lower price points, I’ll be curious to see if it becomes the trendy way to brand “public health”. The framework is similar. _Medicine_ presupposes that the body in its natural state is “healthy” - if something goes wrong, medicine intervenes to return the body to normality. *Wellness* takes the idea that healthiness falls on a spectrum, and there are always things you can do (or buy) that can make you _more_ healthy. Public health essentially takes the same idea but applies it to a population. Vitamins, meal programs^, and stress reduction are today’s biggest target, but wellness as a concept is making its way into places like residential architecture, transportation, environmental science, and city planning, particularly as the population ages. If your house can be built in a way that makes it easy to get 10,000 steps a day, why can’t public buildings be designed to provide no-contact entrances or infrared temperature checks in conference rooms? ^Notice we’re moving away from the word “diet”, which has the old mindset of weight gain being unhealthy and a diet functioning like a medical intervention that returns the body to “healthy” thinness. How often do celebrity spokespeople now say “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle!”?

  • The dangerousness of Covid-19 was overestimated: probably at no point did the danger posed by the new virus go beyond the normal level. The people who die from Corona are essentially those who would statistically die this year, because they have reached the end of their lives and their weakened bodies can no longer cope with any random everyday stress (including the approximately 150 viruses currently in circulation). Worldwide, within a quarter of a year, there has been no more than 250,000 deaths from Covid-19, compared to 1.5 million deaths [25,100 in Germany] during the influenza wave 2017/18. The danger is obviously no greater than that of many other viruses. There is no evidence that this was more than a false alarm. A reproach could go along these lines: During the Corona crisis the State has proved itself as one of the biggest producers of Fake News.

  • I think you are making a really bad comparison here. TB is bacterial which is why it can get antibiotic resistance and reemerge. Covid is a virus, viruses can't get vaccine resistance. Sure it can develop into a new strain, but we have no indication that covid will mutate as much as something like the common cold and even if it does then we can just come out with a new vaccine every year like the flu once we figure out the virus.

Yes, it was difficult , but at least it was peaceful with people quarantined themselves at home. Honestly , when you witness the riots nowadays, it makes you think why the pandemic happened. We're better off dead , than continuing this endless cycle of hatred. If there was a God, I would surely hope there's another wave of disaster , just to keep the humans quiet.
