  • Wow. Way to go on over thinking something so much that it becomes meaningless. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the work that went into this analysis but I think you've taken it too far in one direction. One can do the same taking Blaise Pascal's or Arthur Schopenhauer's views.

  • I dont think an analysis of this movie needs such a psychological and technical explanation. Instead it should be a personal experience in which you give meaning to it based on your own life events and see it in a more emotional and metaphorical lense. It isnt about neuroscience at all. I mean sure all emotions come from the brain but I think this movie transcends such concrete and dull themes. The scientists and the technology to erase memories by demand are but a metaphor.

  • It is difficult to define a Michel Gondry film as either deep or dumb because there's always a bit of both in them; and yet, he manages to make it work. Great film, but I prefer Human Nature myself.

    jordel2010jordel2010Il y a 2 mois
  • DEEP: because it shows you the power of memories and how much it means to us. DUMB:because from the beginning of the movie they had already had a relationship and lacuna was finished. Also memories might be erased but what about the can’t erase age unless you got the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

You are doing that thing you do which alienates your partner and is a childish reaction to stimulus!" Somehow I think they'll have a better chance the 2nd time. At least I hope so, for my own cyclical relationship.

You can't decide whether it's a romance or a sci-fi coz the director portrayed it equally and beautifully 👍🏼👍🏼🔥💯💯 Plus it's a great turn and suspense

  • Clementine is NOT a “manic pixie dream girl” as she is so often called. Ugh I love this movie so much and this just bugs me. Her character isn’t shallow it’s developed and has purpose in the movie other than existing solely for Joel’s benefit. “Manic pixie dream girl” title is becoming overused.

    Kendell CsizmadiaKendell CsizmadiaIl y a 4 mois
  • Ok but serious question tho. At the end its implied that they go back together and they will eventually broke up again right? Its the only part of the movie i dont like. I mean, i udnerstand that in a relationship not everything can be good, there will be hardship, and etc, because of the compromise u put in begin with someone but it that relationship its hurting you, the sane thing for you would be to let go right? I mean, one thing its having a partner that needs to change works to another state and move with them, that implies a bothersome cuz that wasnt in ur plans for example, leaving the country would mean some bad things for you like, i dunno, moving away from ur family or things like that, spend money in things u didnt plan to. A compromise partner would look for a solution were both can be happy but a difference example would be being with someone that doesnt like what u do for a living, belittle you, wants to control you, in that last example, how the plasticity works? In the movie, wouldnt they learn from their mistakes due the plasticity?

    Hikaru FERHikaru FERIl y a 4 mois
    • The idea is that even without any certainty of if things will end out the same they still persevere because it calls back to how Joel wanted to preserve the memories of his relationship with Clem even if it ended out poorly. Real life romances are never certain. Joel has changed for the better, no longer expecting Clem to save him from his depression, and Clem has similarly changed by being self assured enough to not be as unstable and acting purely on impulse. That's the point of Joel understanding her flaws at the end, he sees her as more of a person. Despite these things, there is still a chance that it won't work but that doesn't matter. The film knows that true love is uncertain but it's great enough to experience anyways.

The Meme InspectorThe Meme InspectorIl y a 2 mois
  • Clementine is supposed to break the manic pixie girl stereotype that is only used for a tool for the male protagonist. She’s not going to fix Joel’s life and she has enough with her own problems as she tells him “Too many guys think I'm a concept, or I complete them, or I'm gonna make them alive. But I'm just a fucked-up girl who's lookin' for my own peace of mind; don't assign me yours.”

  • Thanks for this well constructed reflexion on this movie I like, as well as the introduction of Catherine Malabou's work. I think she deserves a mention in the description. My only critic of your analysis is about "free-will". Firts of all I think that the existence of "free-will" have been demonstrated as impossible both philosophically (you cannot chose the preferences wich drive your behavior and that includes the desire not to act accordingly to your preferences) and scientifically (the fact that the choice happen in the brain before the subject beeing aware of making it negates the possibility of conscious control). Secondly you seem to consider free-will only if it makes people take the "hard" choices (using plasticity instead of flexibility). IMO the choice between flexibility and plasticity is not about comfort vs change/meanning but about the expected utility each individuals attribute to each option.

  • Being able to "resist" and "explode" is also good for performance though. The idea that passivity=good business is false. The most successful companies change society, not the other way around. The most successful workers are pro-active and self motivated. Also, the underlying assumption here is that nobody wants to work hard and must be pushed to do so by unreasonable managers. This is also false. The person who is doing the most work in the company is not the one being passive. He or she is the one who is the transformative C4.
