Can Season 4 of Rick and Morty help us learn.. how to die?

The recent season of Rick and Morty taught us about the value of snake jazz and a good heist film, but can Morty's unhealthy crush and Rick's private toilet planet teach us anything about the inevitability of death? Let's find out in this episode of A Philosopher Reacts to Rick and Morty Season Four.

Check out our friend "Vale of Koth" who let us use their metal song Ithaqua!

  • Rick and Morty illustrates the absurdities of the extremes of many different philosophies in much the same way it challenges our meager understanding of reality by extending elements of modern physics into often silly or mundane but Sci-Fi scenarios: it takes them at face value. I think that a very popular underlying message of the series is that knowing more doesn’t necessarily translate into understanding more. Therefore, no amount of knowledge of philosophy (natural, theological, or theoretical) will change your ability to resolve your unhappiness because that ultimately depends on how well you feel you have an understanding of why you are unhappy (correctly or otherwise).

  • I wanted to downvote this. Not because I don't like the video, I actually do like it. But I won't upvote it either, purely for the fact that I had to watch so many ads. Everyone hates the ads, especially when they're un-skippable. Everyone watches more ads than videos now. It's pathetic, and content creators need to stand up to FRworld as well. People used to post videos and create content because it was fun. Now, it's become all about the money. The content is still there and sometimes it's better than ever, but it's constantly ruined by interruptions that ultimately just piss you off.

  • I think one of us missed something in Rick’s big reveal. Tony DID get through to Rick. Rick never does anything except to benefit himself. He can’t show the vulnerability required to build a real friendship. So he built a giant humiliation toilet scene ready to harass Tony. He put time and energy into it, something he just doesn’t do for other people. That’s why he went to the trouble of delivering food that would make Tony super poo. That’s why he went to Tony’s funeral. That’s why he sat alone mournfully on the throne of loneliness he created for Tony.

  • the act of death is not scary it is the simple fear of the unknown we fear.such as something worse on the other side of death.a rather crude example of this if your religious is hell or a afterlife of torment and to be fair I feel fear of the unknown is probably one of the oldest and most basic fears around I do not agree with saying do not be afraid of the unknown however I do agree with the simple fact that so far we as a race have not conquered death and I feel until we do so we all may as well be children playing with fire trying to hold onto ideas that ultimately mean vary little in the end.I mean no disrespect to religious people but even if a religious view was right no matter witch one I have to ask a vary simple yet important question.who gives a fuck?not being a ass hear but honestly who cares as if you provide a answer then it’s no longer religious it’s fact making blind faith witch by the way I hate the idea of basically pointless as everyone would right away at lest try to go with the former religion that’s now universally fact.nothing is impossible but I feel until we as race learn to stop repeating the past endlessly with different tools we may as well just accept that life is simply what you make it and just say”fuck it my body will feed the worms same as everyone else’s until they can unfreeze my brain from that jar I got ages ago that someone will probably fuck up anyway.”in short just be responsible and think before you act or open your big ass maws.thank you all also fuck it life’s short I’m going to eat some chips now.

  • My pov was that rick actually wanted a friend, remember how he has lost almost all of them trought the series, and how he is always teasing people he likes, i think that he actually liked him and wanted to know more but, something didnt allow it (maybe ego?) So he internalized it in the last joke at the toilet, was actually directed at himself, that moment in the toilet was the realization kicking in and sad af, rick had the oportunity to have a real friend but the ego ruined it and he feels miserable about it

  • What about "Upload", a series where wealthy escape death by uploading their consciousness online. From there, they are immortal as long as they pay the monthly fee. But soon regret this decision and willing to pay a hefty price to regain their body through experimental means. Also question as to if they still have soul. During their new "life" its discovered to be limited base on how much you pay for their home, plus they are forbidden to have a romantic relationship with the living, except for their spouse/widows

  • The way I view death is reverse birth. I was already "dead", by which I mean I didn't exist, for about 13.5 billion years. Then I was born, I'll live however long I live, then I'll return to the same non-existent non-state when my frail body's equilibrium can no longer sustain itself in a way that allows me to be aware of "me". It's a purely natural state for the vast majority of amalgamations of matter in the universe. And once I no longer exist, I won't be around to complain about the fact I don't exist, so it's not really all that scary. I won't exist to experience fear. Unless there's an afterlife, but if there's an afterlife, there must've also been a before life, and there will be an after-afterlife, and so on. But I think the most simplest explanation is death is the end of existence and experience. It's an eternity going by in an instant. But I'm still happy to enjoy existence while I can.

  • Your obsession about Death got you missing the whole point of this episode. Yes, death is an undertone, a plot device which allows the story to come to a conclusion. But the whole point of this story is to highlight Rick’s inability to connect with others and get in touch with his own loneliness. By the end of the episode, once he goes back to the toilet, he finally knows what it’s like to have nothing, he learned to recognize the feeling, and every word spoken by his holograms now hit him differently. While originally not meant for him, the words perfectly mirror the way he feels, and the mockery meant for another is now meant for him. Rick learned a lot throughout this story, and the last scene reflects that best by superimposing the old Rick’s hypocrisy with the new Rick’s vision of the universe, and his own loneliness within it. Rick isn’t scared of death, he just found out that he fears abandonment. Subconsciously, he was seeking a connection. When he lost it, he realized he had no one.

  • wait what? Rick made that hologram for the shy pooper before he died. After his death Rick goes back there to remember him, also to contemplate whether the shy pooper found more happiness before death than he currently has; illustrated by the big holographic show for someone that will never see it because he grew past it.
