Sterling Archer is basically James Bond if he were a drunk with an Oedipal complex. But what if the real reason for his adult dysfunction is a childhood spent glued to the television? Let's find out in this Wisecrack Edition on Archer: How TV Ruins You.

  • Miguel Cervantes is grinning from the grave. This is the consequence of storytelling in its furthest abstraction; its magic. We consume reality and impose ourselves into it based off the myths and symbols which have been consumed. I do not believe this has to do specifically with modern TV and pop culture, it's more of a reflection on the personal ideological development every human goes through, symptomatic of some unconscious activity we've passed on from generation to generation.

  • I was raised by tv! & Video games! Basically fantasizing habits & distorted view of the world is what I got. Not interacting & experiencing the real world caused severe social odd behaviours, thoughts & thinking patterns that I've been discovering & fixing for a few years now. Seriously distinguishing between the fantasy, fictional world (yes even books) from the real world, real universe is quite important as I have realised so I avoid them all as much as possible. I hate it that instead of living in the real world, I was living in fantasy basically doing nothing for most of my life. REGRETS!! Now when I tell people I was addicted to films, music, gaming, they laugh. I wish I could effectively tell them how serious it in fact is but I guess they don't care or are ignorant so I guess I will just let them suffer & learn from their own life even if it will be like getting hit by a whole train of bricks of regret about wasting life. Or maybe they just want to die in the matrix 😂complaining, whining & asking all the wrong questions or just want to live high (matrix) life without ever seeing the reality as it is. It's like seeing through the phone with a beauty or some fantasy filter on & acting like it without seeing the real ourself & the universe.

Tells You of Her strength in Her heart. So yeah, tell Me I'm married to and have kids with "the emotionally insecure mentally self fighting fat ugly looking whale freak trainwreck with anxiety Who should just cut Herself constantly and be bullied for Her looks and Her emitions just to be reminded She is worthless. • I feel like this might be a bit of a stretch. This isn't to say that I don't think that Archer's heavy use of references isn't leaked to his trouble connecting with people, but I don't know if the one is because of the other.

    BrycenotBriceBrycenotBriceIl y a 18 jours
  • Good character writing involves creating all his backstory beforehand, even if you don't even plan on showing it. But it's still a bit of a stretch, really. Because Archer is, obviously, a fictional character. His whole personality (hell, the entire show) revolves around his complicated relationship to his mother. While there's a lot of research regarding how being raised by a single mother is utterly destructive to a developing child, I don't think being supposedly raised by the TV was what made Archer that way. One detail you left out is that Archer is also very bookish, so the TV was not the only source of "real life lore" for him. And he also was raised by Woodhouse, a decorated WWI Veteran. The father figure was there all along. Archer didn't embrace it for one simple reason, which I believe is the crux of his entire character: He's spoiled. That's it. He simply grew up entitled. Add the fatherlessness, being Malorie Archer's son and the bullying and you get the adult mess he is. He's not socially disfunctional. He's a goddamn spy. Blending in and socializing is part of the job. And while he "archerizes" the plan quite often, it's clear he can get the infiltration part in. The References part is something American shows do quite often. You americans might not notice it, but as a foreigner that absorbs a lot of what the absolute cultural powerhouse that is the US puts out, I had enough jokes and references go over my head that I can tell you that Archer makes no more cultural references than the average show. Every character does it, Sterling just does it more often because he is the show's centerpiece.

  • I'm not sure if anybody at Wisecrack might have mentioned it during the preliminary talks about this subject, but Jared... under danger to disappoint you... Stirling Archer IS NOT REAL. He is a parody of a secret agent in Movie / TV Style that is deliberately designed to be non functional and quirkladen. His story does not tell you anything about people in real life with the exception of what the producers and artists in this series backoffice think is absolutely hilarious to see a "spy stuff dude" do instead of being suave and secretive...

  • Isnt Barney Stimpson from 'How I met Your Mother' another example of this trope? He lavked a father figure and as such developed an unhealthy fascination with a television perosnality as it was television that his mother left him in front of. While he begins as a sensitive hippie, it is not much to push him over to what he grew up understanding a tough guy was... Ie. Someone like Archer. Archer and Barney are in the same sense the same guy, just with different jobs.

  • I've spent most of my childhood studying this idea actually. Not necessarily television but the lack of depth and perspective in people and peoples' lack of deeper emotional connection and communication. I was that kid. Noted I mostly watched PBS so yeah, worth it all. Makes me see that a lot of people have a lot to see but then honestly, we do see it. All of us. Television doesn't make us escape reality, it is a "reality". Seeing world peace is amazing and from all the happiness in films I'd like to see more in real life. The idea that people have grown up with mental issues and literally removing reality into something more picturesque, more narrative than something what's really happening. That's what we need for our generation. #GenZ We need mental health and proper morals established because in a world full of manipulating people. We should manipulate to follow your hearts and dreams at least. Maybe just me here, but I'm not alone. It just sucks that one day all our work as a generation is simply going to be a serving to the next generation just like like all the generations behind us. #PracticeGratitude
